E-Petition To Re-Instate Free Ved For Older Cars

Recommended Posts

Rob_the_Sparky

Restore a rolling 30 year-old exemption to VED, for classic vehicles

Petition

This may not impact most 205s just yet but it will soon and given the dramatic reduction in the numbers on the road this should help preserve more of them.

A lot of people (including me) think its a bad idea, it is likely they will introduce restrictions for use of historic vehicles like they have in some parts of Europe already. So you will get a free tax disc and save what is a very small amount of cash in the scheme of things but you might not be able to use your car in city centres or low emission zones or only for a limited mileage or ???.

if that were to be the case, I would ignore the ruling. Cars are to be driven.

The above proposal is why I do not want my car classified as an historic vehicle, it will almost certainly result in limited usage and also may force it to be 'period correct' i.e. unmodified.

Well generally in Europe it is much harder to modify cars already, with many countries having quite strict rules. I would not be surprised to see these brought in anyway in the long term, although strictly our rules already mean that many modified 205s should be on Q plates anyway. It just seems that no one is that bothered about the rules.

You're not wrong there, a lot of cars on here technically require a BIVA and then a Q plate if they actually manage to pass. I have never seen it discussed though, not sure if its ignorance or a case of burying heads in the sand. Even modifying the bulkhead to allow an engine conversion is enough to irreversibly trigger a BIVA, if (when) VOSA ever crack down on it there will be a lot of cars taken off the road.
