205 Gti Cant Get Insurance

Recommended Posts

205BigTosh

hi guys, i have been on the usuall compare the market sites and after 6 years of the car been off the road, it was time for to get it back on the road.

its a miami blue 1.6. mods done are a 2.0 litre 16v from the 406 and a stainless exhaust system.

thinking to myself, no problem just pump the info in to the modified part of the quote.

comes up NON STANDARD ENGINE so i tick this as it doesnt give me much else.

to my amazement i get 3 quotes back saying the cheapest is 1183.45.

when i insured the car back in 2005 it had an s16 engine 2.0 litre 16v and i was getting insurance no problem around the 200 mark, i cant remember who with as it was years ago.

im only going to be doing roughly 4000 miles a year as i have been restoring it and will be a weekend car in the summer etc( good weather)

can any kind person who has done this mod (engine 2.0 litre 16v) point me to an insurer who will insure me no problem at good prices.

also what risks is run if i just insure the car with a standard engine, im getting quoted 140+ with that no problem. obviuosly i dont want to go down that route by telling porkys, but what choices do i have now?

many thanks.

Generally, for major mods like a swapped engine, you'll have to pickup the phone and speak to the usual brokers - HIC, Adrian Flux, Sky etc. Online comparison sites aren't really suited to quoting for modified cars.

Certainly given how HIC's pricing policy used to work, I wouldn't expect any notable premium increase for the 406 engine thanks to the lower insurance group of the donor car - always seemed an odd way of working it out to me, but at the time I didn't complain as it effectively meant my 205 Mi16 was the same price as the standard 8v engine would have been.

Insuring it with a standard engine when it's very obviously different to even someone that doesn't know 205's is a very silly idea - plenty of people have done it and got away with it, some of whom have probably had accidents too, but have a major smash and the assessor comes looking for a way to get out of it... well, it will effectively render that insurance policy null and void, which really isn't what you want if you've just hit and killed/injured someone.

Agreed. I knew of a 205 that had the "V" removed from "16V" on the rocker cover in hope to make it look like a 1.6 engine

thanks for your reply anthony, yes i thought of all the problems leading to the 1.6 fibs and was definitley not liking the idea, as i said i had it insured last time with all the mods listed,

engine

full stainless magnex exhaust.

lowered.

i read the sticky post above with insurance and adrian flux pops up again, im sure i had these guys before, think their good with this sort of mod.

OMEGA- hi mate i had the 306 si6 2.0litre 16v in the car to start with until i ran into a kerb at 10mph turning out of a junction, i hit black ice and the wheel hit the high kerb face on. few days later, a big bang happened.so we toe,d it home , stripped the engine and to find the shock of the hit had cracked the oil pump and more or less destroyed the engine.

so i bought a running 406 that was scrapped not to go back on the road, the engine had covered 54k, so was to good an opertunty to lose, i couldnt get hold of an s16 after looking for a while. so me and my dad popped the 406 in , was a straight fit as usuall and a lot tidier to fit, wire and hoses wise.

only downside was i had to get the ecu re-mapped as it was running through the 406 keypad immobiliser, so i had to send it off at a cost of 120 quid, the loom for the ecu is on the drivers side ,not the passenger side, so we had to fabricate a slot on the inner wing (passenger side) for it to slot in like the 206 gti. apart from this, its pretty straight forward and no real problems, she runs smooth, apart from not having power steering, god its heavy again. but yeah all is fine, i will post pitures up when i get a chance.

thanks for the info ive allready unlocked the ecu [i think disconnected it with the engine running so dont need to use the code anymore] was selling the engine complete for 80 pounds but got messed about so might have to find some room in the shed to store it.

thanks wes i am 34, its not garaged but sits in the driveway.

when i phoned admiral they told me the car didnt qualify for classic insurance. mines is on an H plate. this was before they told me they wouldnt insure it because of the engine.

did you phone them up or do this over the net mate? do you have your car insure fully comp or TPFT.

cheers martin

I'm a little older than you and car has similar/more mods - sits on a driveway and limited to 5000 miles a year - fully comp.

AS already mentioned try these:

try -

HIC

Adrian Flux

Footman James

Most companies are either 15 or 20 years for a classic policy, which an H reg car is, although there's usually the clause that it isn't your only/main car. I've had classic policies that don't require the car to be garaged, and I'm pretty sure that I was less than 25 at the time too - different policies/brokers have differing rules.

Honestly, ignore the usual mainstream insurers as they're useless for anything that isn't a standard run of the mill hack. Pick up the phone and call the specialist brokers and you'll get a MUCH better deal - as I said, I always used HIC in the past but there's loads of others out there including a few named on this thread.

Am i right in saying Adrian Flux is the one for rally cars? I don't have to tax or insure my rally car but just mot it. I want to keep it on the road though as i like to give it a run now and again between rallys.

Totally agree with wes205. I tried just about every known modified car insurer and footman was cheapest by miles...£220 with everthing declared and Minimum payout.

Also, Footman will insure on classic for anything 15 years or older, and they dont use your no claims on classic policys, so i went and got a cheap 106 diesel and used the no claims to insure that for £130....Took the strain of my v6 fuel bills so much the 106 has pretty much paid for its self already!!!

 - I brought the car like that from a guy called Dean from warackshire......and yes Maxi, I do "lurk" in your area.

He did not just grind the V off, he also put a dot between the 1 and 6  and yes, I did insure it as a 2.0

You can just make it out in this photo...

hi there guys, i phoned footman james. i got quoted 332. with 4k miles, i asked if there was anyway cheaper of getting the price down.

he said if you lower your annual miles to 3k it will be 241.

my question is, what happens if i go over this mileage, do they have a way of checking the miles, i havent had this problem before with my every day car. they dont check the mileage or anything. is this incase i have a claim do they check,

how does it work if i rum over the mileage for the quote?

My brother is on a limited mileage policy and they ask him each year to declare the mileage.

My understanding is that if you go over your mileage limit the excess goes up if you make a claim. It might vary between insurers though.

pretty decent quote.

i have now phoned HIC and got quoted 233quid fully comp and thats without the unlimited mileage.

i will phone adrian flux next 2mro and see if they can beat that..... so its looking better now.

I think so Damien, I've just used the "family car" side of the business to insure our Mazda and the interest charge was a decent 13%.

yup :)

do check the total cost beforehand though, some charge quite a lot more, I like the fact that flux will split the premium into 3, 6 or 12 monthly payments, I went for the 3 months which meant I could spread the cost without incurring a large credit charge like I would have with Admiral who were the closest on the basic premium, but £100 more paying 12 installments :o

I'd pay more and go with someone else other than Flux, You pay for what you get is I will say.
