Mi16 Woes

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Been stripping ben.rallyes MI16 engine, all of the top piston rings are in many pieces like so:

^ Every one is just as bad if not worse.

What is this caused by? Fatigue or something else?

There was about a litre of mayo that came out of the block and inlet in total :(

It was everywhere! Looks like a s*it composite gasket was fitted, or is this standard? I'm only used to fitting multilayered gaskets on steel blocks.

Number one big end bearing had some serious pitting, no damage to the crank though?!

Crank looked in ok nick so can do with a polish by the looks of things, one of the liners had alot of coolant in it and i'm afraid it's corroded the liner.

Block's not cracked and the liner seal seats look in good condition after a good scrub.

Only GTi-6's have MLS gaskets AFAIK - all other XU's (including Mi16's) use a conventional headgasket.

If the liners are corroded and he can't stretch to the cost of new ones, I've got a couple of sets here - one Mi16 set that have some wear on the thrust side as usual but honed up well, and an 8v set that don't seem to have any notable wear and again, honed up pretty well other than the odd mark. Wouldn't want a great deal from them as I'm unlikely to use them and they're only taking up space.

Otherwise, sounds like you've done well if the block and crank are both good :)

Any idea on the rings, they're f***ed

Whats the history on the engine, Ring breakage is very rare to say the least unless they may have been like this from install?

Again for the liner seal to fail with everything in place is rare too, even my CTi block which was horrid had good liner to block seal's

It's apparently "rebuilt" not so long ago. Rolling roaded with 160bhp. I really don't know how to be honest.

No history though.

The liner seals where ok, it was the gasket which had failed by the looks of it. Heavy corrosion in places.

if the gasket is badly corroded it sounds like it could be lack of anti-freeze used.

Never seen rings broken like that, could have been damaged when they were intalled but would have thought they would have damaged the bores by now

That was my guess as well mate.

The bores 'looked' ok but probably wont be when measured accurately.

That was the largest part of the rimg intact, the other bits were no more than 10mm long!

I personally don't think they've been changed when it was 'rebuilt', just the main bearings. The big ends looked quite worn with no.1 heavily pitted, luckily just very light scoring on the crank.

My guess is the hg was going for a while, as there was a little mayo in icv and breather pipes.
