Track Slagging A 205

Sorry for not really using the forum since starting up, but the 205 restoration has been slow of late due to other money priorities. However all is about to change.

Basically the car was purchased with no interior and a rusty exterior with a blown head gasket. Its a Grey 1986 Non Sunroof 1.6 ph1. mileage reads a whopping 240,000 but the engine was replaced with a later model 1.6 with 80,000 miles not long ago, this has been confirmed!

So far engine has had a new head gasket with stage one rebuilt head and tidied up under the bonnet, and the exterior rust has been repaired but paint not paint matched at the moment, only the seats have been sourced for the sparce interior.

Whilst at USC ( Santa Pod ) this weekend i saw quite a few 205 gti's stripped and caged for track and they looked pretty tasty, not usually my look for such a classic. So this got me thinking, perhaps i should cancel the lengthy and expensive OEM restoration and turn it into a simple track car and enjoy straight away. Im thinking two cheap buckets, harnesses and a cage, sticky tyres with better brakes and then hit the track?

Anyone with experience on how a closely standard 205 handles itself on track or is it not suited for such a roll? Would it be criminal to condemn another GTI to the 'track car' corner of ebay?

Thanks for reading, advice please. :)

The fun you have with a standard GTI on track, standard power and just some decent suspension is quite brilliant.
