What Would Likely Be The Quicker Car

Recommended Posts

For a track/road car what would likely be quicker. I just gave a mate a hand fit a 20v turbo in to his mk2 golf and got us talking.

Mk 2 Golf approx 1000kg

20v turbo 205bhp/250 lbf torque

205 gti approx 875 kg

MI 16 ITB etc 195bhp/150 lbf torque

We were both thinking the Golf would destroy it.

Our other mate has the above 205 and it's quick I would have thought with the extra torque the Golf would be quicker.

The Golf would definitely destroy it if the gearing of it was right.

Comparable power to weight but the Golf has masses more torque.

No contest. Golf the winner.

Ooooooooooohh that's a bingo! :D

The extra torque could well make getting the power down out of corners quite tricky.. but if both were prep'd the same with LSD's the Golf would have the edge on the straights.

It's the corners where it matters though, and the 20vt is a very heavy engine!

I have loads of torque and no lsd and I never have any problem getting it down at any time.

It is impossible to say which is quicker, it is too open ended a question.

Which is quicker in a straight line? The Golf, no questions.

Which is quicker around a circuit? This one is more tricky to call. Depends largely on the setup of the Golf.

My own 205's are a track car with 177bhp/145ftlb and a cage, proper seats and belts, and my turbo 205, 205bhp/211ftlb and standard seats. The turbo car is faster in a straight line. The NA 16v is faster around a circuit.

The Golf has an LSD the 205 doesn't, I know the 205 has no traction issue's in a straight line, No wheel spin 1st gear etc

The 205 is a track car with cage seats where as the Golf is still standard inside.

We got the Golf going tonight and it feels alot better than the 205.

My mate with 205 had a shot also and said it was like night and day from his car.

Road car I think the golf would have the edge in everyday driving situations but on track it might be a close run thing, depending on the suspension, brakes & driver.

With a quiafe I assume it's not outside besides the obvious engine swap.

There was a member who signed up on here a few years ago after a few of us met him at a cadwell trackday with a MK2 golf 2.0 16v, cage, decent suspension & brakes that was giving C_W a run in his old standard engined 205 Mi so I expect it would be close on track but hard to pick the winner depending on the circuit.

It really is a pointless question IMO.

It might even depend on how brave the driver is! :)

Could very well be a pointless question but I was curious.

I got the answer tonight though and witnessed it with my own eyes.

Cheers guys

The Golf was slighty quicker up until about 50 then the 205 was pushing it.

The 205 got up along side but didn't have enough to pass, By then it was time to slow down as speeds were ott.

The MI is deceptively quick, I didn't think it had a snowballs chance in hell
