Mixture Problems! Opinions Needed!

Just bought a 1990 205. Was running at high tick over so I have adjusted this down to as low as sounds right (1000rpm when warm). Still didn't sound quite right so I fiddled with the mixture screw, it's as far out as it will go and the engine sounds a lot better but is still smelling rich. Are there some other ways I can look at sorting this out or is it just a characteristic of an old unloved pug?
