Cleaning The Engine Bay Up A Little

Recommended Posts

Richie

I was thinking about tarting my engine bay up a little bit.

ie: making all the rubber pipes black again, and perhaps getting new washer/coolant/brake fluid reservoirs

does anyone have any tips or can anyone suggest a good product to return the black rubber bits back to black? can you use the same stuff like auto glym bumper snot that you use on the outside trim?

thanks

I have used the bumper snot and it works well. I have also heard of folk putting their expansion tank in the dishwasher to clean it up although I have not tried this.

It's good for alot of other things too. I know friends of mine and my dad years ago having pistons in the dish washer too!

For plastics and hoses Aerospace A303 protectant.

I have had all kinds in our dishwasher. Alloys, heads, carbs and indeed, coolant & washer bottles.

I've just cleaned the engine bay of my Laguna but didn't take pictures to show the results. There was an oil leak that had covered a good bit of the underside of the box and engine etc.

I used what has always worked a treat for me: 10:1 mix water & tfr from a big sprayer. Soak it and let it sit for 5 mins. Autosmart wheels in a small spray bottle, neat. Mist the area again. This is real harsh stuff imo. 5 to 10 minutes later blast the lot with a pressure washer. To dress I use Autosmart Highstyle in a spray bottle misted over the lot and left sit for 5 minutes then another misting buffed over with a cloth.

I use Muc Off bike cleaner cos i have loads of it lying around :P, use WD40 for the really caked on stuff like tar and old grease.

Comes up a treat for about a week, til my leaky cam seals do their dirty work again...

The dishwasher trick didnt work for me, ended up buying new tanks for the brake, washer & pas.

I know Dales shotblasted parts of his engine, and looks very clean., then a bit of plating and looks good.

Autosol, rags, and achy fingers for me.
