Wiring Help On 2.0 Mi16

Recommended Posts

jeremy_spoke_in

I'm having difficulty reconnecting my s16 engine back into my 205. I had help removing the engine from a friend who is too busy/far away to come back and help refit. The trouble is i let him cut the wires presuming they'd be labeled in a way i or anybody else could rejoin them.

Sadly this is not the case  and i've spent many hours making absolutely no progress in figuring this out.

I've made a quick drawing of what i have hopefully it's legible:

Rather confusing where there is 1 wire going to 2 or 2 to 1

Another photo of the engine wires, these have been extended with black wire by whoever did the conversion. These were all covered with black tape, having removed this i found the labels still intact. These are the ones above eg A 12v starter...

Under the dash where wires were cut:

Hopefully someone can help as i really am stuck.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm gonna be brutally honest here and say that I feel it's not really feasible to give any kind of hints on your wiring based on the pictures you've put up or any for that matter.I think honestly mate that your gonna need someone with auto wiring under there belt because it's a tough one this. The previous guy I would imagine probably had a good idea of where he was going with it but for someone to take it up part done is a tough one I'm afraid.

It's the kind of thing I love personally and if I were closer I would help you out but the only thing I can suggest from here is either an auto electrician or someone sympathetic because whoever takes it on other than the first chap is almost gonna want to start from scratch I'd guess.(I would.)

As a good start though if you are electrically minded have both sets of wiring diagrams to hand and try to form a mental picture of what you want to achieve based on the wiring diagrams, and from that point attack it in blocks at a time i.e....sections,like wipers, horn, lights etc, until the list of sub systems starts to reduce to just a few like engine management etc,and if you can get it to just a few areas that are causing problems, thats allot better than all of it and much less daunting to.

Hope it goes well for you.

All the best

O.T.

thanks OT

I think you are right, trying to rewire somebody elses mess is just a nightmare, especially when theres so many other cut wires already. Its a shame that the only part i trusted someone else to do for me when removing the engine was to snip these wires. I didn't even feel it necessary to say at the time make sure you label them. Its common sense surely.

Lesson learned. I'll be cutting any wires myself in future and labeling properly.

This might be a bit tricky but it shouldnt be impossible. just so i am clear- you have a 205 loom and you want to join it to the engine loom of an s16 and the s16 loom has been extended by black and red wires?

When you say trouble reconnecting and putting the motor back in the car i take it the motor has previously been installed and has been up and running?

Is the bundle of wires in the footwell pic leading to the multiplugs under the dash by the pedals? We should be able to id each of those wires from previous posts. When i first put my mi16 in there were loads helpful comments and diagrams kicking about. It might take a bit of searching and reading - that said i dont know how the s16 loom differs from the mi16 loom

Looking at the footwell pic - what happened to the other end of that bundle; where are those wires? if i have got this right they should run throught the bulkhead into the engine bay?

I will check the labels on my multi plugs later today if that helps at all.

You are correct the engine was running in this car before being removed. You may wonder why it was removed... because i intended on dropping a gti6 engine which i had already prepped (re-angle manifold etc) before buying the car and also wanting to tidy up the engine bay. Later i decided to stick with the current engine due to not having enough spare time and thought it wouldn't take much effort to put back in.

Yes the footwell pic is wires going to the brown plugs and the cut end goes to the black wires of the s16 engine, which should join through the bulkhead. The black wires and 1 red in the engine pic were cut where they were spliced to the 205 loom.

Below is the only picture i have before the loom was cut. Not very helpful but you can make out a few heatshrinks.

If you have labels on your multiplugs that might help.

thanks Cactus

Right i checked my loom

you have two multi plugs a 9pin and a 6pin the 9 pin is well populated with terminals the 6pin only uses 4 two are missing completely. if you look on the multiplugs they are numbered on the side 1~8 and the ninth pin is called something like ab or similar i just cant remember, same on the 6 pin:

ok here goes nine pin first

1 brown wire ignition supply number 52

2 purple damned if iknow

3 yellow coolant tremp switch number 47

4 red coolant temp guage number 47a

5 brown alternator warning light number 7a

6 purple oil pressure switch number 30

7 white oil temp guague number 30a

8 grey oil pressure guage number 30b

9 thick blue starter motor number ?????

now the 6 pin

1 no wire / not populated

2 white fuel pump number ??

3 yellow with green dash Earth number ??

4 grey coil to revcounter number ??

5 no wire / not populated

6 2 wires on one pin thick red and a yellow

thick red ignition supply to ecu number ??

yellow damned if i know number ??

You may want to verify this as there are a couple of wires which i just cant recall. but i seem to remenber one of the purples was something to do with emissions or cat equipped cars or something and the yellow one i never got to the bottom of either.

continuity testing is sometimes handy if you cant follow where a wire is going

hope this makes sense, I am sure a few of the other members will jump in to fill the gaps or correct me if i am wrong.

just looked at the pic again - if i were you i would get a multimeter on the engine loom and run continuity tests on each cut wire to find out where on the motor they go to to I would also be doing a good bit of searching the older parts of the forum for helpful wiring guides people may have posted.

Thanks for that Cactus. I'll hopefully get time this weekend to have another look.

I hate to think how many hours i've spent trying to figure this out.

This topic might offer some further help into finding what wires you need etc.
