Other half is not driving at the moment but is thinking of a job change where by she will need to - she is Australian and has only driven automatics, she likes 205s but will never consider a car with a manual box.

Not knowing anything about the base model automatic's eg, XL, are there any issues with the gearbox, how expensive is it to replace when it goes?

I'm presuming the 1580 is a tuned down version of the 1.6 gti engine? What are the gear ratio's like eg, motorway sitting at 70 whats the rpm

I have found the ratios to be decent enough, unless she likes the traffic light GP's as 1st and 2nd are quite long. IIRC 70mph is approx 3250 rpm. I have found the gearboxes to be very good with smooth changes even after 120,000 miles, just check the fluid level and colour.

Nope she is not interested in performance just something basic easy to drive and loves the 205 for its looks. 3250@ 70 is a lot more economical than mine! Seen one on ebay 27.000 miles 94 yr old woman from new but its tax & mot run out last month otherwise i'd snap it up!

My mate uses a 309 auto as a grass track car and the autobox has taken all the abuse of racing with no problems at all. The engines are mono point injection and have 90 bhp and as has been said no the quickest off the line.

Earlier models are carbed, auto choke can be a terrible ass-ache so I'd go for one with manual choke conversion - thirsty beasts!!!! compared to manual injected variants.

Injection ones are far superior, I've had both. The box saps alot of power mind and 35mpg is about the best you can ever hope to get.
