Why Are The Glovebox Locks So Pants?

Recommended Posts

happygoron

More a rant thread than anything, just had my second glovebox lock jam on me, this time with the stereo facia and my sunglasses inside so I'm not gonna leave it for a year or two like I did the last time. What are the locks so rubbish? I obviously didn't lock it myself as I don't even have the key for this one! I hear you can get a base model one without the lock, anyone have one spare? Otherwise anyone know any tricks for avoiding this occouring?

Having looked into it, I discovered that it's easy to accidentally trigger the lock from inside, thereby locking it shut without the key.

A bit of investigation later, there's a small plastic tab that you can knock out with a screwdriver/punch which prevents the glovebox lock from ever locking

Its the same on a 306, theres a tiny plastic button on the inside of the lock, so when you cram the glovebox full it always presses on the trigger and locks up! Very annoying.

I've done this for years, stops the problem.

A pair of sunglasses and a stereo facia is hardly overfilling! And it was empty when it last jammed!

Anyway, got a new one on the way, any pointers to where this plastic tab is located?

Inside the glovebox facing downwards - when it's protruding from the lock body it's unlocked, and when pushed in, it's locked.

Remove the piece of plastic and the lock is permanently in the unlocked position :)
