Quick Gti6 Help Needed!

Recommended Posts

Just been to view an otherwise perfect 306 gti6 - I love it but it has a misfire that only appears under heavy load under 2000 rpm - "moneypit walk away" or "knock the pice down and swap the plugleads/coils"?

Everything else checks out great; driven "normally" you wouldn't notice just big throttle openings at low revs.

So for those of you that know the six, does this sound ominous complex and expensive or not?

Advice very gratefully received :) I've had nightmares on the Mi diagnosing misfires that worsen over time, replacing ecus coils amps etc etc etc

ps. they don't stutter on low RON fuel or anything do they?

My old 205 (gti6 engine) did this. Turned out to be a cracked coil pack

Knock the price down and risk it!

There are that many I'd want a big discount of walk away. It could be any number of things and it will be your time figuring it out rather than enjoying it.

EDIT: just to add to that. why hasn't the owner fixed it?

Because he doesn't get his hands dirty = oil will hardly ever have been changed.

Because he can't afford to have a garage look at it = same as above plus other maintenance.

Because he has tried all the easy / cheap stuff = difficult / expensive repair for you.

If your selling a car with a fault I think you either price it v.v.cheap or expect to get haggled to death over it. If you care you will just fix it first.

Walk away if you are not confident on what it is.

They are ten a penny.

You will be hard pushed to find one that doesn't need something doing to it, but for the difference in price between a shed and a minter, I would hold out and buy a cheapy and use the money saved for what ever it will need.

Even 'minters' will have things fail that you will need to pay out on anyway. A cheaper example with a new cambelt and a good body would get my vote.

I break these, so if you need some coilpacks or a new engine should it be worse  Call me

Ah you see there is a twist (isn't there always  )

I moved to Sydney a year or so ago and there is a major dearth of cars that aren't camrys falcons or utes around (!) not many of these for sale, it's got a straight body cam belt done cold air con suspension tight low miles aaargh I'm talking myself into it...!

At $5.5k it's the cheapest of the 3 (!) in the state too! Values here are obscene

Were it the uk I'd just go find another

Hmmmmm

And K, the owner was selling it for his old man and reckoned he'd not noticed it before (seemed v genuine) - you've really got to floor it in the wrong gear to notice it..

All very valid points mind

Hmmmmmmm

So best case coil or somethings got damp, worst case ecu or something I guess

I will ship you one for less

If you are keen then see if you can get the vendor to let you do a compression test. If this comes back OK and none of the plugs are covered in black oily goo then I would take the chance and go for it.

Thanks everyone :D

It's the shiny red (diablo?)

Not handy enough to do a compression test  would be good piece of mind though :)

Importing a huge ballache for a car at this level paperwork-wise, however it hasn't escaped my noticed that at the other end of the market a £20k BMW M6 in Blighty is worth $120k++ here.. would be a nice way of getting a free runaround for a year and making an eaasy  £40k

Even the Holden/Vauxhall thingies are more expensive - go figure

So consensus is low rev high load misfire *could* be something more serious than ancillaries (plugs leads coil etc etc)?

Much obliged the forum comes up trumps again B)

Diablo. Best colour B)

I break these, so if you need any bits let me know. I have some good coilpacks if it does appear to be that.

Got it. love it. missfire far better than i remember almost imperceptible unless you're trying to force it.

Quick question - fsh shows advisory "breather hose rocker cover to throttle body needs replacing" - could this cause a missfire?

Cheers!
