Started To Not Start Esp. When Hot

Recommended Posts

Please share clues as to the offending part, it always starts eventually but sometimes need 5 or 6 goes - seems to be a hell of a lot worse when its done a long journey (as I found today)

In what way does it not start? Clicking starter? Engine keeps on turning over?

Most likely the old starter solenoid problem. A combinbation of a poor signal to the solenoid and a old starter. The solenoids seem to need a better signal when hot os if yours is poor (many are) then they will refuse when hot. This can happen with a good starter as well depending on how bad the signal is. Best go do some searches as it was a problem covered a lot. (not been on much for a few years so don't know if discussed recently).

but don't hear fuel pump firing up.

I agree that the most likely candidate is the starter motor, especially if it's one of the fat-bodied original fitment starters that are prone to non-start issues when hot.

However, the apparent lack of fuel pump does raise the possibility of it being something further up the chain that's not behaving like the immobiliser, as assuming that this is a Jetronic 8v that we're talking about, the fuel pump should run when the key is held in the crank position, regardless of whether the starter motor turns or not. If it doesn't, that suggests that either the tachymetric relay isn't quite working properly (entirely plausable) and thus two seperate issues, or that there's no power on the solenoid wire hence neither the starter or fuel pump do anything.

This however is not the case on Motronic equipped cars such as CAT 205's and Mi16's and the pump will only run when the ECU gets a signal from the crank sensor showing that the engine is turning over.

Had the same issue, steadily getting worse over time. Just fitted new starter motor (slim recon gti6 one) and it fires first time every time now.

I took the opportunity to clean up all earth points while I was at it and cleaned all other connections including the tach relay. Spot on now :)

I recently got a starter from gsf, franzen brand, for less than fifty quid after discount. The thing had started my motor every time since going on, so maybe it's worth considering one of these instead of a recon unit
