Tightening Torque Settings

Recommended Posts

Daviewonder

Hello All

I'm about to venture into the unknown and attempt to replace the Big End and Main Bearings on my 2.0 Turbo 8v. If it all goes well I'll be needing to Torque everything down when I'm putting it back together. I've got the settings but the torque wrench doesn't go low enough for some of them as it only goes down to 40nm.

Oil pump- 15nm

Big ends- 20nm then 70 degrees

Mains- horizontal 25nm vertical 70nm

Pulley- 130nm

Anyone got any tips or advice on ways round this please?

Cheers, Dave :)

Get a better torque wrench. I am guessing yours is a 1/2" drive as it only goes down to 40Nm. A 3/8 drive one typically goes lower and is more suitable for engine torque settings.

As above a 3/8 torque wrench or I wonder if you could use the xu9ja settings on big ends? They are a straight 37lbft instead of having small torque then angular.

The oil pump do up with ratchet 15 ain't a lot so just tighten like you would a cam carrier cap, same with horizontal main just a bit tighter. The critical ones are vertical on mains.

Big ends- 20nm then 70 degrees

Can do them 81Nm in one go , but needs an good accurate torque wrench ...

I don't think this is correct. I tried doing them to 81Nm with a calibrated torque wrench and this happened-

I thought it was a bit too tight so I tried undoing them again and they just sheared off :(

Crap  ... shame on me , so sorry , i did write it wrong :(

It's a - 51Nm (not 81Nm) , and need to wire brush clean the bolt threads and oil them with engine oil prior to tightening ...

Sorry once again , suppose i'm getting older , my memory doesn't serves me as good
