Noise Whilst Turning Left Under Power

Recommended Posts

McSwerve

Hi there new boy here.

I’ve just collected a great little 1.6 gti that I intend to use for a bit of cheap Autotesting on Grass / Gravel.

The only problem so far is that when you turn left there’s a vibration noise, made worse dependant upon how much power you have on.

I’ve had a search but not come up with that same issue. I guess it’s one of the mounts, but wondered if this is a regular problem.

So gti Jedi’s any thoughts on what the problem could be, and if it is a mount, what the best form of replacement would be (Group N / Standard / Diesel) for a bit of light motorsport?

Any advice gratefully received.

Sure it's not a drive shaft?

I had a similar problem once when turning right. It was turned out to be the top engine mount. It was the type with the buffers on a plate and the plate was the wrong way round causing it to rub and vibrate against the surrounding metal.

Update on my grinding noise……

I did a grass Autotest (winning the Best Beginner prize in the mighty Pug) and there was no sign of the noise, but then soon as I got back on Tarmac it returns.

I gave the Drive shafts a waggle and there doesn’t seem to be any obvious play. Is there a more definitive testing method?

Regarding replacing the mounts, is there an idiots guide knocking about? I’ve had a search but nothings come up.

Any advice gratefully received, as I’m about to book up an Autosolo on Tarmac and would rather do it in the 205 than the RX8.

Cheers

If it's a knocking/vibrating noise that is only present when turning one way, varies with roadspeed and gets worse the more load it's under, then my money is on a dead outer CV on the driveshaft, especially being a 1.6 GTi model (which seem to suffer far worse than the 1.9 GTi shaft design in my experience).

It does feel / sound like a grinding joint.

Is there a way to confirm it’s knackered?

This weekend there’s a 25% discount on everything from Euro Car Parts, so if I pull my finger out this weekend, establish which one’s shot, I can get one on order.

Cheers for the advise.
