Can Someone Please Explain The Eccentric Tensioner To Me

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

So I got the head back on and torqued up last night. Today I've managed to get the crank pulley off after a can of plusgas and about an hour tapping it with a rubber mallet. Water pump and tensioner off but I can't seem to understand how it works. It's the later type with the eccentric tensioner.

Is it a case of 'nipping' it up tight, the turning it with the square hole to get the right tension, then whack it up tight to make sure it doesn't move? Seems a bit crued to me but I can't work out another way?

Thanks,

Ross.

As above get belt on tension eccentric and nip up nut spin engine over 2 revs by hand,re time crank and cam adjust tension and tighten nut back up on Tensioner. I would give it another 2 revs and recheck tension.

Or, if like me you are a paranoid freak with OCD, I do the turning over two times and checking thing about 477 times before I am happy. I then count to 12 before walking through the garage door.

Stop looking at me.

478 is better as it's an even number

No need for the OCD once it has been tensioned and everything is tight then 2 revs by hand it cannot really change unless something has been seriously cocked up

Doing numerous vaux v6's and Subaru boxers has probably made me blasey about doing belts???

Thanks chaps, I'll refer to this when I put the new one on.

Something I've just noticed when looking at the Haynes is my camshaft didn't have a 'thrust plate', should I have one? Also which way around is the camshaft seal meant to go? I assume its so the 'full' side with the little grooves is towards the cam, and the 'open' side where you can see the tiny spring on the inside, faces towards the sprocket?

Finally, how far in is the seal meant to go? There is a lip/slope on the cam but it doesn't seem to go that far.

Thanks!

Some have 'thrust plates' and some are held in place by butting up against one of the cam brackets (caps?).

The seal goes spring facing inwards toward valves I put it in flush with head just give it a smear of oil on lip first.

Only certain engines have a thrust plate from memory it is early 1.6 and DKZ engines on sprocket end cam cap.

The other engines have a shaped cam cap to stop cam end float.

Have you sorted the valve clearance and rechecked now head torques down?

Okay ill get the seal fitted tomorrow. No I've not done the clearances yet, I rechecked the head bolts today but didn't get time to do the clearances, probably wont be until Friday now. Slowly getting there! I got my injectors back from InjectorTune today, they look mch better, I'm fed up of looking pintle caps into the engine!

These little pugs can be a pain can't they? Got my own engine issues at present lump in garage ready to be stripped again.

Don't put belt on or fit seal until you have checked valve clearances, just make sire pistons are half way so no clashing of valves turning cam ( can't remember if they time with all 4 half way)

I rechecked the head bolts today

Why? Torx bolts are single time torque down & don't need to be rechecked, that was only for the original Hex head bolts & after the engine has been run up to temp with the fan cutting in.

With the crank pulley correctly pinned the pistons are sat level in the bores.
