SurGie 54 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) Im lengthening/re-newing the alt wire to battery and need to know whats the correct size/amps for this alternator ? Also, i have the 306 D type battery. Cheers G Edited July 20, 2011 by SurGie
rallysteve 22 Posted July 20, 2011 Im lengthening/re-newing the alt wire to battery and need to know whats the correct size/amps for this alternator ? Also, i have the 306 D type battery. Cheers G Hi George, the alternator charging current should be printed on the alternator label, i would expect it to be 75 or 90A, so you will need that current wire minimum. If I was you I would probably connect the alternator wire to the starter motor and use the battery cable to the battery to keep the wiring tidy and reduce the cost of buying other cable. SurGie 54 Posted July 20, 2011 Thanks Steve, i'll have a look at it later on. Yeah sure, im going to put the wires all together like the old 8v does. Im going to use thicker wire from the battery to the junction box because of the battery i have for it and i want it red not yellow. I assume the 2 fuse's of 25amps will be enough ? jackherer 543 Posted July 20, 2011 I assume the 2 fuse's of 25amps will be enough ? They're nothing to do with the starter/alternator. The main power cable you're talking about is totally un fused so you need to make sure it definitely wont chaff or touch anything because it will definitely start a fire if it shorts to earth. SurGie 54 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) I thought the two fuses are for the, 1 brown plug for the fan switch etc wires and the 2nd one for the yellow wire from the battery to the end of the junction. Of which im thinking of changing to a larger wire and use shrink sleeve wrap on its ends. Then again there is the engine bay loom live plug to be fitted Edited July 20, 2011 by SurGie
jackherer 543 Posted July 20, 2011 If the battery>starter>alternator cables had a 25A fuse anywhere it wouldn't last very long... All the main power feeds are fused at the shunt box and then the individual circuits are fused at the fuse box but the starter/alternator cable definitely isn't protected so everything before the shunt box is a bit of a liability. rallysteve 22 Posted July 20, 2011 To Clarify what has been said I have knocked up this drawing to show how the main system is connected. It can be seen that thicker wire is needed from battery to starter, then slightly thinner from alternator and shunt box (maybe 16mm^2 / 110A to be on the safe side) Steve
