Hi all im looking to buy a 2004 plate audi A4 avant 2.0 fsi

Has any one owned or own one? I would prefer a TDI but none have the same spec at the right price.

Looking for some helpfull advice on running costs, and if there is any problems to look out for.

Also how baby friendly as my partner is expecting our first child  and I dont like the thought of using the MI or rallye

All info would be appreciated as everything looks ok on paper but want some real drivers views.

Richard

I have an 04 A4 TDI Avant. Its a great car, however it isn't the biggest of estates so aside from anything else I would check that there is enough room before you buy. A Passat is similar money but quite a bit larger.

VAG cars are built well, but be aware that parts prices can be eye watering. I like rear wheel drive and so went for a BMW 320d, but as known to happen I blew the engine (under warranty thankfully, due to the inlet manifold flaps). Just beware and I would be carefull as good cars are generally kept hold of, buy with a warranty if you can.

I may have been lucky but I've yet to come across this.

Some examples of bits I've bought for mine, from the main dealer

Genuine Cambelt kit for my TDI from the main dealer, with all rollers bolts etc £105

Replacement heated wing mirror glass £22

Rear wiper motor £82

For brand new genuine parts I am not personally complaining, in some instances the main dealer are cheaper than ebay, for example a new expansion tank cap, £12.99 from ebay, £7.50 from the main dealer.

I have a 1999 B5 facelift A4 Avant V6 Tip. It's full spec with all the extras from Buffalino leather to load liner.

It's been with us since new, covered 120,000 miles and it has broken once, that was a rear wheel bearing. It cost 12 quid for the part and took me an hour or two to fit.

Fair enough, she is not as frugal as a TDi engine, but mine is a V6 petrol, thus I win.

(Audi automatics are ace)

My previous car to the Audi A6 TDI I have now was a MK Seat Leon Cupra 2.0 TFSI which is essentially the same engine with a few tweeks and a K04 Turbo bolted on to give it 237bhp.

The engine itself was fantastic, it was smooth and never let me down once. Yes there have been a few reports of carbon build-up on some of the FSI engine and you can read up about this on the seatcupra.net forums or mkiv Golf forums.

My mpg averaged around 27 and that was just around the doors with some occasional blasting. You should see low 30's in the Audi.

Good luck

TFSi and FSI engines hate low octane petrol. This is what causes a lot of the carbon build up within the engine. They get a much better fuel return from proper fuel too.

I've got a petrol variety of the honda accord tourer, it's a brilliant estate car and the diesel varieties are supposed to be good too, in fact I wish I'd chosen that engine. But the car won what cars best estate car category when released and they are very reliable too
