Camshaft Bearing Face Wear

Recommended Posts

Chris_Mi

My lack of having an onroad gti, and the burning desire to drive one again, has kick started me in to starting my project and I'll be starting a restoration/rebuild thread soon.

Having never taken an engine apart before, and only just knowing what by big end is from my shafts  , I'm a bit on the nervous side!

To cut to the chase, I've disassembled part of the engine and am taking the cams out.

However, they have fine lines where the bearing face has worn into the cam, and there are some slight indentations.

1) Is this normal?

2) Are these cams knackered? I was planning to send them off to Petert so I'll have to rethink if they are no good.

Thanks

Top picture Defo shows a knackered cam with a chunk missing,I would think the head and cap are showing wear also?

If you are going to lay out on sending them all the way to Oz and having them reground, I would personally find the best possible cams you can. The bearing surfaces on those are not good and as said, the matching bore in the head can't be too pretty either.

Strange because the bearing faces on the caps and head don't show any similar wear.

Is this cam definately written off then?

i would not use it as that is in a bad way strange the soft alloy caps or head aint worn if the cam is that bad, wonder if that cam has been in a different head previously?
