205 1.1 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

I've got a friend with a 205 1.1 TU (1990 model) which may need a new gearbox. Not entirely convinced it needs a new gearbox, might just be a linkage/mounting issue, but I haven't seen it.

Anyway, if it does need a new box, I'm going hunt on eBay for a cheap replacement. As 205s are getting thin on the ground, do any of the 106/306 versions do the job? IIRC it's a MA gearbox.

BTW, it used to be my car, so I've got a certain attachment to it, and can remember some of it's characteristics.

The smaller engined 106, 206, 306, 309, ax's and saxos all use MA boxes.

The diff pin is bigger in later models though so you need to set the driveshaft oil seals slightly proud of the box to enable them to seal effectively. I''ve heard that use of the these later boxes with 205 shafts can cause the dif pin to fail due to the interference with the end of the shafts, but I don't know if this is a real issue.

Some later boxes will also be set up for cable shift rather than solid linkages which needs buggering about with to convert.

From memory the 1.1 box is pretty long so there shouldn't be many with ratios that you can't use.

HTH,

Be careful - The 306 MA box wont fit. The linkage setup is completely different!
