Check Your Rear Pads ?

Recommended Posts

gaz832

nearly had a big crash there on the motorway , my 205 gti has had some new pads put in lately, i thought they where fine, but then at 70mph the rear left locked up and jammed , what a cloud of smoke. managed to get over and un jam the pads from the alloy and caliper . ****ing shat myself . really sick of this car now, think im going to put it up for sale, getting really tired of spending money on it now.

Drum brakes FTW

Yes, I've not had that problem with rear disks myself but heard plenty of stories of the pads coming loose usually resulting in almost total brake loss. It's recommended that you lockwire them in place.

Usually either the sliders have been put in the wrong way around, or they're rusted up and worn away and needed replacing the last time the pads were done anyway..

Which way does the pad retaining clip thing go in?

Top or bottom of the carrier? Miles told me last weekend and can't remember now.

Well done for getting though all that, could have been so much worse.

The gti6 ones i sorted out had the pin clips rusted away so these do need to be part of doing the rear brakes as well as the L brackets. So yes lock wire can be used, i have some stainless steel roll of it in case any go missing.

The L bracket goes at the bottom and the lock wire in the hole of it at the ends.

This happened to me too last Tuesday... Not 100% sure what happened, but I ended up with a brake disc split in two and the caliper sheered of the bottom bolt and the top one bent about 45 degrees. There was enough force to bend the mounting point for caliper bolts, as when I tried a replacement caliper with new bolts it would not slide... The alloy has a bit of a 'scape' inside it too.

RAC truck home that night. I was just happy that nothing more happened than a big cloud of smoke behind me and a very long thick black line being left on the road...!

That happened to mine years ago, the damage was done at less than 20mph and it was still enough to bend the rear arm. I ended up putting a new arm on the rear beam but that turned out to have different geometry to the other one so after I figured that out the beam had to come apart again to fit a known matched pair of arms.

well wnet and got some new pads and fitting kit today. bought them from peugoet themselves this time, kit fits perfect and the pads seem different to others i have bought. anyway , cars back on the road. i then took my mum down to the chemists and when i pulled up i started braking and the headlight glass fell out, honestly, its one thing after another, luckily i have lots of spares for this deathtrap.

go on, flog on your f*cking death trap!

cannot wait to see some un suspecting boon, not much unlike you, throw it into a corner, and expect it to come out facing forwards.

I severly doubt you have even checked your brake lines! Very glad I did, as they litterally disintergrated infront of Welshpug and me.
