Removing Welds On A Cage

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps whats going to be the best way to remove these nasty welds on my cage?

Will a pro be able to get them off and make a nice job without f***ing up the main roll cage tube?

looks like a monkey did it, belt sander will be the only you'll get in there.

That is horrific, may as well be duck taped together!

I think Iain is spot on there, maybe a grinder with a flap wheel to take the majority off, should make pretty quick work of it.

I'd say you'd be ok just take your time with it. I'd definitely take the cage out if possible, will make the job much easier.

You won't be able to re-use the tube that's welded to the main hoop unfortunately, it'll be too short once you grind the welds back. They best thing you can do is cut the tube off as close as you can either with a cutting disc on your angle grinder, or a hacksaw if you aren't that confident, then use a sandpaper flap disc on the grinder to take the weld down. Don't use a grinding disc as they're too aggressive, if you're careful then nobody will ever know the welds were there.

As Ed says, easiest way with those would be to cut them out with a 0.7mm cutting disc on an angle grinder, then grind the weld back to the parent tube using flap discs on an angle grinder (get a decent ceramic disc, make your life a lot easier).

If you are very careful with cutting the tube profile you might just save enough tube to be able to weld that back up properly.
