What Is The Longest Ratio Be3 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

peter

I curently have (think) a 306 turbo diesel gearbox fitted to my 205 unfortunatly it has a too short ratio.

So what has the longest ratio? i think the 306 hdi one is longer than the dturbo but is there an even longer one?

A TD box will give around a good 24mph per 1000rpm, If you say this is too short you won;t get much longer unless you go custom

that sounds about right as my 205 does 110mph max at what i think is 4500rpm (no revcounter) being a turbo diesel.

Just been researching the hdi box and apparently that does 27.7 so i think that may be a good option as that should give 124.65 mph however it has 195 45 15 tyres so it will be slightly less

but does anyone know of a longer one?

Would a custom box be just swaping parts or an actualy custom made internals?

thanks

ii am watching with intrest as i now have to do a lot of moterway and am happy with the first 4 gears but would love a 5 gear that would let me cruise at low revs and give me better mpg etc

the standard 1.9 box will suffice on the motorway, mine will do high 30's mpg average if you keep the speed down ;)

mine does about 33 but i would like more,as well as more mpg its got to better for the engine plus less noise in the car.

what about changing fifth for one from a diesel box?

if memory serves correctly fifth is easy to change with box in situ?

when i went from a std 1.9 box to a 1.9 with Mi (4.44) cwp, my fuel economy only dropped by 1mpg, at the time i was commuting between birmingham and aberdeen (430 miles- not every day!). from memory revs went from 3600 to about 4100 at 70mph. It didn't make as much difference as i thought

Yup, I'd agree with that - I've never seen a noticeable difference in economy between a 1.6 and 1.9 gearbox on the same engine/car, despite the 10% odd difference in effective gearing / cruising revs.

Mine is an Mi box with a 1.9 final drive. Gives me standard 1.9 gears in 1 to 3 and a longer 4th and 5th. 70mph in 5th is about 3200rpm which puts me spot on where the boost is just about to come in, making motorway cruising easy

So can anyone confirm that the longest box is the hdi? as its for a diesel and needs to be very long to get a moderate top speed

306 HDi is certainly the longest BE box I can think of off the top of my head.

Just remember the potential side effects of running a longer box - yes, you'll potentially gain a higher top speed (although how fast do you really need to go in a TD?) but assuming that you're running a standardish 1.9 TD engine remember the comparitively high boost-threshold. Quick mental calculation suggests that you'll not have boost in 5th until about 60mph, which would make typical A-road driving very frustrating IMO as you'll be constantly falling off boost whenever there's any traffic - I found that issue bad enough with the standard box on 205/306 TD's that I've owned, and a longer box would only make it worse. Less of an issue on an HDi engine as you've got boost on that from ~1500rpm or so.

BE4 from a Xsara HDi 110 is even longer than the 306 HDi box. Don't have the ratios to hand mind you, but about 29mph/1000rpm.

I dont think ill have a problem with where the boost comes in as at the minute it pulls from 30-110 in fifth, and even if the boost is only coming in at 60mph i can sharp drop it into 4th!

As for why, most modern cars even citroen c1, corsa 1.2s ect will fly past my 205 after 110 and we cant have that now can we?

Ive just had a look at be4 gearboxs, and theres one on ebay but not from a 110bhp xsara and it looks like a straight fit. infact it looks like a be3 box any ideas?

xsara box ebay
