1.9 Gti Subframe And Axle

Recommended Posts

backroadpug

Hi all Im hopefully away to pick up a battered and bruised 1990 1.9 gti tommorrow.

Im looking on fitting the front subframe, rack, arms A/R/B and hubs. And also the rear axle to my Rallye.

Is this a pritty straight forward job?

Questions I have are what shafts do I use and hubs

Can I use the rallye flanges in the 1.9s hubs to fit the TU shafts ? or does the 1.9 shafts fit the TU box?

Also does the width of the wheel base change?

Cheers

try a search, but assuming your using a UK rallye

use either the rallye hubs, or the 1.9 ones as they are the same i think* with the TU shafts.

The 1.9 shafts wont fit in the rallye box

you'll need to use the GTi shocks, as they have a TAB that the ARB connects to

The gear linkages will need to be moved on the GTi subframe

you will get an increase in track

if you're mechanically capable of learning new tasks quickly yes :)

no, different size bearing

or does the 1.9 shafts fit the TU box?

no, larger splines.

Also does the width of the wheel base change?

1.9 is the same track width as a base model, 1.6 is 20mm wider, though from the factory used 6mm deeper offset and narrower wheels so overall track wasn't any different than the 1.9.

what you need to do is retain the base model hubs, modify the gear linkage post as mentioned above, compare the old subframe to the XU one and you'll see straight away what needs doing, basically cut off the old and weld onto the new one.

plus you'll need droplink compatible dampers, which I gather you'll be taking from the gti if they're any good.

I have vague recollections of a brake pipe bracket needing to be moved, but I'm sure someone else will enlighten you on that!

learn something new everyday!

Ive had no issues with the brake pipes converting both an XS, and a GT. I thought that was just a CJ/CTi issue?

I've heard that but when i swapped mine i never relocated the brake pipe bracket and it clears fine. I know Anthony did have to move his though so it may be a shell variation?

I have done this on two Rallye shells and oddly only had to move the brake pipe brackets on one to clear the ARB

from my experience if the rallye the same as 1.6 gti swapping back axle will be easiest part, seems alot more work on front end as the back axle a doddle in comparison

so my 1.6 model with 1.9 alloys is 20mm wider than a standard factory 1.9 then?
