Oooops! Just Bought This For Spares (See Within)

Recommended Posts

sport1901966

Just bought this on a bit of a whim - 205 GTi ebay link

Got such a list of random parts I need I thought to myself..... "why not buy a whole car for spares?". Well I just did and now need to sort transporting it home and go to the effort of stripping down etc. I think it was worth it as long as it is as described. I definitely need an exhaust (coincidentally half the weight of the current exhaust is equal to the weight lost on my mig wire reel!), the seats look alright (with a bit of dye to sort out the fading).

With any luck the driveshafts will be ok and hopefully the rear beam will be rebuildable.

Can you tell I'm trying to convince myself it was a worthwhile purchase!

What do you guys with experience breaking these down reckon (cough..Baz..cough!)? ;)

Geoff

Looks like an expensive stainless exhaust to me especially if you don't have your own tow car and trailer...

Thanks for the vote of confidence! lol

It's not just the exhaust. I need a number of bits of trim (inside and out) bearing in mind a good set of the external door/arch trims seem to be going for ~£50, the seats are the kind im looking for, gear knob, driving lamps, driveshafts it goes on and on. And I'll get some back for the bits I don't want. If it ends up costing my £100 to £200 for the price and time of sourcing the bits I need separately I think its worth its money.

Don't forget you'll get some sort of scrap value for the shell after too I'd have thought.

I wonder what the going rate is?

C reg 1.9, must be a very early model!

Is it not worth saving and putting back on the road?

Also true, I'll have to look into this.

I don't know to be honest. The shell sounds like it could be in a fairly bad way. However put it this way if someone were willing to do the work and didn't mind me taking a few bits from it then they'd be more than welcome to it for say £200

Should make a decent amount back off bits and bobs. £100 alone for scrap. If you break, I'll have the wing mirrors off you if they are in good nick, and gear stick gaitor surround (has 4 clips, small piece) ;)

I dont think its an early model 1.9, might be more likely a 1.6 with a 1.9 engine. Hasn't got electric windows which leads me to beleive it was a 1.6. Could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure all 1.9's came with leccy windows.

I couldnt get anyone to pick up my old shell for any money and personally to much effort to take it to the scrap yard as again doesn't weigh a lot. Geoff good buy i reckon for parts as you dont realise little parts add up and there a pain in the arse to find.

Interesting what you say about the electric windows, I'll have to look into that as it should really have been advertised as such. I'll bear the mirrors in mind, may want the gearstick surround myself though :P

My thoughts exactly about the parts. I'll have to investigate the scrapping side of things. I remember that pic you showed me, classic!

Can't go wrong with that to be fair if you can get it back to yours easily/cheaply anyway. :) Worth that in parts alone easily IMO!

I doubt you'd get much if anything back for scrap, if you took it yourself you'd get something, but i'm guessing there'd be not alot if anything left on it, i'm usually just glad mine are taken away for nothing as that's lucky tbh, most of these 'we pay cash for cars' type people don't want to touch anything that's already been dismantled to any degree it seems.

Glad other people think so. Anyway at worst I've got that NS door red strip with a free car attached!

thats got the early 1.6 105 bhp engine in as far as i can tell, it certainly has the very early cam cover without the top breather outlet. maybe the cam cover has been put onto a 1.9 engine??

it does have yellow injectors so probably is a 1.9 just with the early cam cover on.

all the running gear will be 1.6 if its original, didnt make a c reg 1.9.

interested in those cobra seats though............................

Hmmm I'm definitely going to have to check this out as it certainly makes me rethink my interest in it. I was hoping for some braking and running gear spares that it won't have being a 1.6. Not the end of the world but we shall see. Thanks for the heads up fellas, as always the knowledge on this forum is impressively extensive.

That would be no problem, I certainly have no interest in the dash so its yours when (or if depending on the out come of this issue of it being a 1.6) I get the car.

Just going back to it probably being a 1.6. Are there any obvious means of identifying the running gear as 1.6 ie hubs/driveshafts etc? Hubs at the rear will be a obvious clue but it depends to what extent it's mixed and matched. It's likely I'd still buy it but I want to know exactly what I'm getting!

Cheers, Geoff

Hub nuts give it away, normally 1.6gti hub nuts are the stake type. Meaning that after they are tightened a punch is used to secure the nut down onto the driveshaft.

But some 1.9 gti shafts come with this but they are a rareity. The 1.6 nut should be around 24mm off memory the 1.9 35mm.

P.s. are you still going to need those compensators if it turns out to be a 1.6?

Thats brilliant, the knowledge of details you guys have is astounding lol.

Already managed to sort a pair of compensators courtesy of Baz but thanks anyway Paul.

It almost certainly started life as a 1.6 GTi I'm afraid - brake line layout is the biggest clue, as there only appears to be 3 lines coming from the MC in that picture, with the line that feeds the rear brakes crossing over the MC. Doesn't mean that the rest of it hasn't been upgraded to 1.9 spec of course, but I would suspect that it's merely had a 1.9 engine transplanted into it at some point in its life and the rest of it is 1.6 based.

Close. 1.6 are usually 30mm hubs nuts, and 1.9 are usually 35mm (36mm on some aftermarket shafts).

As said, that wasn't originally a 1.9 & all it says is ENGINE REBUILT LATE '90s (NOT DRIVEN MUCH SINCE), not swapped so I'd expect it to still be a 1.6 lump.

All base model & 1.6 GTI's should have 30mm front hub nuts, all 205's have 32mm rear hub nuts.

I have come across 30mm rear hub nuts before a few times.

Exactly my concern. I'm not particularly concerned about the engine itself, but I would like some 1.9 drivetrain spares. I'll be speaking to the seller tonight so all shall be clear then hopefully.
