Caught In The Nick Time

It's a fairly well known weakness on the 2.0 8v hdi engines that the lower crankshaft pulley disbond over time, which when they finally fail you can be unlucky & be landed with a hefty repair bill if you don't act fast & replace them.

I was driving home from work a few weeks ago & when I was stopped at some roadworks a few miles from home noticed a new noise coinciding with engine rpm.

I got home & popped the bonnet with the engine still running to find a nut bolt loose through a bracket on the engine (apparently doing nothing anyway) so I removed them causing the rattle to almost disappear.

Next time I drove my 306 it was better but there was still a different ticking noise at idle so I investigated further by removing the seperentine belt & lower pulley which instantly gave away the source of the new noise.

As you can see in the picture below, the pulley was just starting to breakdown;

I fitted the new solid alloy pulley I'd bought through the TDOC forum & its all sorted.

This pulley was approx 2 1/2 years, 35k old & non genuine from GSF.

It must be the years of pug ownership that have tuned my hearing to any new noise & grade its possible cause to prevent a disasterous failure.

I almost learned this lesson the hard way, a few months ago my Shogun started making a tapping noise, I just put it down to tappets, checked the oil, and carried on.

The crank pulley came loose and came off whilst on the way to a trackday with the trailer on.

In a stroke of luck the pulley and its bolt! wedged themselves under the vehicle and did not fall off and get lost. I was able to reassemble it at the side of the road (due to going to trackday had tools and loctite on board) and carry on.

However I shall now be listening out carefully for new noises on anything!

Would a similar crank pulley be used on the 2.2 hdi?

Only reason I ask is that my Dads 406 is making a right rattling noise that I had put down to a failing injector.

I think it'll depend on the age of yur dad's 2.2 hdi but i wouldn't be surprised if they have something similiar & a quick look on service box shows the same number for the pulley for the 2.2 hdi (0515V6) on the 2.0 hdi as well.

Later hdi's have a solid mount with the alternator pulley modified to a bonded type afaik.

Its an 02 02, Im not sure what the production run was like on the 2.2 so no idea if its early or late. Will be worth investigating that area of the engine though when I get a minute.

I had a new noise once and it turned out to be a cambelt cover bolt that had worked loose and holed the belt and eventually jammed behind one of the camshaft pulleys! :o

sorry for dragging an old thread up, but the crankshaft pulley on my 2.0 8v turbo engine seems to have slipped like thjis, hence when i timed it up using the timing holes it locked, what other solid pulley could i use? would a normal 1600/1900 8v pulley fit?
