Tud & Xu Valve Shims

Recommended Posts

Nice quick (hopefully) & easy question, does anyone know the diameter of the TUD valve shims?

I'm struggling to get the sizes I need for my engine, they are on back order through Pug & prices have rocketed since I last got some @ ~ £2 each to £6+ for the remaining sizes I've ordered.

Looking through service box I noticed the TUD shims are available in much better size variations than the XU so I wondered if anyone knows what diameter these shims are?

The XU ones are ~13.5mm dia.

Thanks for any help.

they sit in the top of the bucket and is what the cam pushes against, about 25mm diameter at least.

I guess you know that the XUD shares the same shims as the XU, time for a raid of a scrapyard maybe?

Or even a call to a local engine machinist, that's all I did when I needed some and they had a very big pot of assorted sizes.

Boo, that sucks but at least it was worth a try.

Yeah, I know all the XU heads use the same shims, I've stripped five XU heads so far but all the shims from them are to small so I've had to buy some which were in stock but still need a few to finish my car with proper spec clearances.

I've tried several engine machine shops nearby & none of them had anyting in stock anymore now that the majority are hydraulically set but luckily after a phonecall with Stew Baker he is able to make me some from EN16 to the sizes I need so I'm sending Stew a spare shim & list of the sizes I need to get them set right. :D

Myself , i usually take some larger ones and thin them down by hand sanding up to the value which i need for proper valve clearance , needs :

- shims

- one flat board

- sanding paper -> 80grt , 180 , 300 , 600 , 1000 and finally 1200

- two stroke oil and WD-40

- elbow grease !

Put the board on the floor , and just tape on the sanding papers (so that it doesn't move ..) one by one through grades , so few circular motion scrubbing of the shim pressed with fingers onto the sanding paper with gradually decreasing the grt grade (finishing with 1200) , and with adding lubrication while scrubbing (two stroke oil and WD-40 mix ...) .. just need to be careful not to scrub them the wrong way around cos the top which goes up the bucket lifter needs to be edge curved , and bottom flat (so i do them on the bottom ..)

That's the problem damir, I have plenty of shims that are smaller but none close to the bigger sizes I need that I could thin down.

I also have a friendly machine shop nearby who ground four of the last set when I'd wrongly calculated the sizes I needed for £5.

After speaking to Stew_205 I'm having some custon ones made. B)
