It's good that you are being realistic. It is a shame that they will value the cars so low, so what you should do is get a comprehensive list of other cars in a simular condition, with simular spec and miles etc. Prove to them that this is what it will cost to replace. If they offer you £500, you can present them with a list of proof that you will not be in a position to get a replacement at that value.

If they give you a decent price, and you want to buy it back you should be able to. I have experienced a couple of companies that really don't want you to buy it back from them.

A friend of mine actually benefited quite well with a buy back. He got crushed between his Pulsar and a Laguna that reversed into him in a car park. His leg smashed the light, bent the metal grill section and pulled the bumper off its pikey cable tie fixings. The assesor said its worth a payout of £2100, minus a couple hundred to buy it back. All he had to do was buy a light from Ebay and bend the grill back. The bumper cable tied back on underneath as good as before. Obviously you have a bit more work cut out for you, but at least you may be able to buy it back and get a bit of money as well to put to getting a new shell to put the engine in.

If you're wanting to buy the car back, either to repair or to break it for parts, the biggest bit of advice I'll give you is to NEVER let the car be taken away - keep it on your property at all costs.

A friend of mine had an accident. They held the car, and then 'lost it' with all his belongings etc in it.

He's not alone by any means - someone on here (NOsMAN IIRC) actually had their 205 GTi sold to a breakers by the insurance company a few years back before they'd even finalised the claim or agreed a value with him! :o

They wanted to take it away to vauxhall but i said i was not happy with that, so they are sending out someone to look at the damage. Should i print of pics of cars to show the person who will be looking at the damage? Or send an email to the insurance company if they offer a rubbish amount?

Never let it leave your sight!!! A friend of mine lost a rather nice throttle bodied clio cup with minor damage because he ignored my advice and let them take it away for assessment - The insurance company were adamant that it was still his property and would be returned 100%....last i heard it was 'lost' in a Bristol breakers yard; i guess some lucky bastard found it and nicked the itbs! Wouldnt have minded finding something like that myself!

The insurance chap has just been and gone. Took lots of pictures and said due to the age of the car and the cost of repair they will most likely write it off. So just have to wait for a call from the insurance company to see what they say!

How long is this going to take? If i reject there first offer which is most likely to be rubbish, how long will the next offer be? I go to aiya napa on sunday so hope its sorted by then!

I don't want to put you off but I wouldn't expext them to be so quick.

Get on the autotrader and PH and print adverts of similar cars and fax them to them.

Good luck.

Very good idea, i emailed them links of other rallyes (rather nice or rally prepared ones :P) and that helped me get it fixed, I think my final repair cost was about £1800 haha!

My STDT in very good condition was written off because of a broken headlight and indicator! although I did make a fair bit of money from that claim. They took it away though and then mid-claim took it to be stored at a company that was also a breakers, 80 miles away...

I got it back though, although as soon as I heard that I phoned the insurers, the breakers, etc. and explained how mental I'd go if they crushed it.

Good news! I have found out her insurance company and she has accepted full liability. Her insurance company is liverpool victoria, They are sending out someone from vauxhall to inspect the damage.

What is likley to happen now?

you MUST inform your insurance company you have been involved in an accident, as this affects the road-worthiness of the vehicle they have insured. It will also be in the fine print somewhere on the t's and c's. However, if she has admitted liability, it is meerly a formality, and not in anyway bad, so they can make a note of this. Previously I got caught out with this. Just call them to make a note of the record.

You may also have legal assistance on your policy to help you claim against them if they start getting arsey.

my old miami was written off with very similar damage, good shell too, with the benifit of hindsight, i would find somewhere cheap to do the repair and get it fixed.

cheers
