Lock Problem

Recommended Posts

I decided to have a spare key cut for the 205, as I only had one key with it.

Went to Timpsons, they had a blade available and cut one and I was happy.

Tried it when I got home, turned both ways in the drivers lock and not a sausage.

Used the original key afterwards and it opened, but now wont lock at all.

I took the door card off, and by wiggling the original key in the lock the plastic cam bit on the back of the lock only very sligthly wiggles, but won't move enough to lock.

The newly cut key has a more prominent end to it where the machine cuts the sides of the blades, but doesn't go around the point enough to cut in and make it quite round enough.

I suspect that the insides of the barrel are now ruined therfore the original key won't operate it. Perhaps the final 'pins' in the end have been damaged, or left in the wrong position by the larger newly cut blade.

I very much doubt Timpsons would do anything for me, as they cut the key based on the oginal, and will put it down to the lock being too worn or something.

How much is a new lock set from Peugeot, presuming you can still get them. I don't really fancy a new Drivers side door lock replacement alone, as it would be a pain to switch keys for ignition every time.

New lock set from memory is around £106 or similar from memory, i have an invoice downstairs for one.

Funnily enough though the set is now spare... ;)

Is it a full lock set? Doors, boot, fuel cap, ignition?

How much are you after if you would sell Baz?

Before you shell out on a new lock set, take the barrel out of the door and check the plastic thing that joins the cylinder to the levers - it seems unlikely but it may have just worn out.

Was 100% until I put the newly cut key in there, so I don't think it is that.

I may just get one new lock, use that on the pass side and put the pass side original lock on the drivers. I will very rarely want to lock from the passengers side with the new key, so can unlock the drivers door and start the car with the original key. Once in a blue moon when I go to open the passengers side first, I will just have to use the other key.

I wonder, is the boot lock the same sort of lock, same part number? Or does the button/way the mechanism is operated differ from the door locks?

If you swap the locks around you'll have to swap the plastic things as well, and in my experience they normally break when trying it (I could just be heavy handed though).

I'm afraid the boot lock is entirely different :(

If I were you I'd take a slightly different tack and fit an alarm which will allow you to unlock the doors using the fob - remote central locking.

Not only more convenient than having to put the key in the door but on par with more modern cars.

I will be going down that road in the future when the car has an engine etc in and wiring sorted.

If I was to fit an alam with remote central locking today, because the lock is stuck in the open position due to something inside presumably broken, the central locking actuator would be unable to force the white plastic arm on the back of the lock as it is stuck in a position.

Grim badger, Good point. I overlooked the 'left/right' issue with the plastic arms on the back of the barrels, I didn't give it a thought.

Really then, the only simple option I have right now is to change both door locks and ignition and make do with perhaps using this original key in the fuel cap and boot.

Then when my rewire is sorted I can get a decent remote central locking alarm.

Properly lube the lock.

They're not easy to do, but when done it transforms it all.

I've done all mine.

I reckon one of the pins has been moved more than normal (due to teh new key being more prominant) and so that pin was moved into a more 'crudded' zone and so not moving back where it needs to for teh locking to move, so making it stick.

Will WD40 be sufficent? I did put a couple of squirts in, but didn't want to over do it. Suppose I have nothing to lose to drown it!

A bit of 3-in-1 is better than wd40 in the lock for a temporary fix. My front locks gave up last year, especially the drivers which frequently got stuck, would turn to both sides without opening and the key could not be pulled out after many, many attempts.

After getting stuck in the p#ssing rain last winter for hours, swearing at the 205 (again) i found a valeo 2 front door lock set on ebay. Now have second key (frowned upon here) and only took an hour to fit both, but at least I can get in and out of the thing!

If your car is H reg onwards, just get a remote sensor and fob from a 405. plug and play within 10 mins.
