Life Expectancy Of Wishbone Poly Bushes

Recommended Posts

Paul_13

Morning all,

The other week I fitted these bushes to my 309 gti wishbones which I have on the diesel, they haven't been on there long but they feel as though they're fubar'd already!

It's pulling me all over the road and snatching really bad in corners.

There's also a horrendous clunking noise going over bumps/on and off throttle. I've tightened the wishbone bolts several times and it stopped briefly be reappeared. It seems as though the collar on the os rear bushe is too small.

There also seems to be marks on the wishbone from where the arb has made contact.

They should last longer than a few weeks surely?

I've ordered an oe wishbone bushes kit with bolts which should be turning up today hopefully.

The common advice on here to fit the OE bushes is for a good reason!

I've "cured" a few 205 GTI's of awful handling by junking these supposed "uprated" bushes.

The only ones I've found to be any good are the quite expensive purple (polyflex?) ones that have been on my trackcar for about 4 years now with no problem.

Right ok, just I was told by the bloke who sold me these they were half decent and the oe ones that were on there were shot giving similar symptoms. So I fitted them as a temporary solution until I got some oe ones, but they lasted a lot shorter than expected!

I am normally totally against poly bushes lol

Just a quick one but which way up should the new oe bushes be fitted? I didn't note the position of the old ones and I find the search function hopeless!

Doesn't matter which way around they go, obviously the front and back are different sized.

Just I saw a pic ages ago showing which way the 'Y' shape faced.

Can you post link to your gordon ramsay style thread please. Can't find it

By go in any way, I mean circular wise. They will only fit from the outside in as far as I know.

As for the thread, good luck, I can never find threads on here even if I know 100% they exist, even if I wrote them.

They won't fit in the subframe if theyre pushed in from the inside.

I think I've got an old wishbone at home, ill have a look at the bushe to have a look at the placement in the arm.

hi paul,

I had a set of polly bushes last only a few thousand miles. the metal rubber metal sandwich of oem is far far better than the unbonded center that floats inside the poly bush.

go oem, don't look back.

It doesn't matter which orientation they go in rotary wise, if you cut one up you'd see why, but the section is uniform at any angle.

That's the info I was after cheers :)

The poly bushes pushed in really easy by hand, I was half way through and thought o f*ck, but too late to go back on myself and needed the car for work.

Glad to see its not just my s*it luck J, was it superdooper flex you had?

Weirdly the red ones (PolyRace iirc?) are the only ones i've ever found to be any good, and last thousands of miles, Anthony has a set that've done 30-odd k i think!

But... there is some dodgy ebay red ones if i recall, so they may not be the same ones!

My understanding was that the poly bushes aren't really a bush at all. The metal sleeve rotates inside the polyurethane meaning it is, in fact a bearing. It also means that the metal sleeve soon wears out the polyurethane leading to slack and clonking.

The OEM part is a genuine bush in that the metal sleeve is fixed in the rubber, meaning the rubber twists creating the bushing/damping/isolating effect.

It is also why (I thought) you are supposed to only torque up the wishbones once they were in a loaded position.

Either way - OE parts good, poly parts bad.

They're the polyrace ones I have, haven't lasted at all. Don't quite know how Anthony has had over 30k worth of use out of them

I knew I shouldn't of put the things in in the first place! Oem ftw

Now have the fun job of fitting the bloody things tonight! Gotta take my mate to get his car motd in the morning, go get some tyres fitted, tracking and go to the motorfactors before 12 joy!

Strange! Maybe they're simply not as good as they used to be then or similar, because i've had 3 or 4 sets over the years and have a couple now that are fine!

A big vice will push the bushes in if you have no press, be warned they are a tight fit and it does need to be a big strong vice.

you'll need 10mm for the rear bush iirc.

For the front bushe I think. It's a smaller bolt.

Got 10mm and 12mm rod and nuts now

Hopefully it does the trick

Would ruined polybushes cause the car to snatch from side to side in corners and veer into the curb under throttle? (even light throttle at 50mph!)
