A Mystery Pipe

Recommended Posts

jackflash

Hi all,

I have been playing around with my pug today and found a pipe disconnected, it runs from under the throttle body and then rearwards, its about 5-7 mm in diameter. The pug is a standard 1.9 89plate. Could someone please give me an idea where this belongs?(or what its for?) Also I have a small problem with the idle. It wont hold when i initially turn the key but after 30 seconds seems to settle around 1100/1200 revs. Any help would be great

Regards

It's a vacuum pipe ... needs to be connected onto the dizzy vacuum capsule on the other end ..

As for idle , common problem , search for terms -> SAD (supplementary air device) .. also , check for air leaks ..

righyt-o

i had better buy a new pipe as its completely vulcanised.

So ive read up about the idle problem and cleaned out the AFM, connecting air pipes as well as alot of breather hoses. Does it help to replace/remove the mesh in the top of the oil filler cap?

I was looking at the throttle body but im not sure which screw is which-is the large one on top the idle screw?(doesnt seem to show in the haynes manual)

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply its much appriciated

Oil filler tower mesh - no , it will not affect the idle .. but it's almost always completely collapsed/rusted off , and the bits of wire mesh then end up in the sump mixing in oil which is not good ... so if it's bad replace it with a mesh for rubbing kitchen pans/pots ..

The idle/air screw (for adjusting the idle speed) is the big brass one , it's on top of the throttle body .. try to tweak it a bit (turn inside to lower the idle outside to increase ..)

ok i will change that mesh-it is in a real state. With regard to the pipe that ws off is that some sort of advance/retard type thing? and would it effect the fuel economy(such as it is)!

thanks

it will indeed if the ignition timing is set correctly :)

well i think the timing is set correctly, it seems to be quite lean as i checked the sparks earlier and they are lightly coated grey/white.

i take it theres no point using a timing strobe to check timing as it will only relate to the original setup for use with 4 star petrol? I have really done it by ear--set the dizzy until the engine pinked then moved it back--is the the best method? I'm kinda using old knowledge and trying to wing it alittle!

anyways thanks for the help guys

the 3rd is a test point for connecting a vacuum gauge when you set upo the injection/ignition system.

Sorry to jump in on this but I am a bit confused by some of these suggestions. I agree the small pipe goes from the trottle body to the vacuum advance / retard on the distributor. However there are 3 other pipes on my throttle body? I have them connected as on the attached. i.e. two in the water system and one to the oil filler cap as mentioned.

Mine is an 87 car but I am not sure how many of the bits are original. I hope this helps and I appologise if other models are different to this set up. I also hope I havn't done something wrong with my plumbing!

Pugs in Pieces

there are breather pipes from oil filler car to induction elbow, oil filler to throttle body top, oil filler neck to block, inlet manifold round to sad, sad to induction elbow,

water pipe for heating the throttle body goes from throttle body to header tank and throttle body to thermostat housing top.

small 8mm pipe for vacuum for dizzy.

normally an additional outlet unused as Welshpg has stated for use of a vacuum gauge.

the thumbnails are not very clear and could be misleading.

It's up to the throttle body type , the ones with outlets for water/coolant circulation where usually on models meant to be exported/sold in country's with colder climate .. there's also one more outlet on the throttle body on models with Motronic system - this one is for the valve for charcoal canister ..
