Oil Cooler - Blanking Off

Recommended Posts

soundguy

A 1.9 8v engine has been supplied without an oil cooler. What do I need to blank off the holes where the cooler would plumb in, as a cooler isn't going to be installed?

Remove the oil filter, undo the hexagon nut adaptor in the middle, remove the sandwich plate, fit a new filter to the bit that should be left sticking out of the block.

As above, should be 27mm iirc.

Is it possible just to blank off the holes with a pair of the right bolts and PTFE tape, and if so, what pitch are the threads?

Yeah its possible, but far easier just to remove the housing as Tom has described im unsure what pitch they are tbh, just remove the union and sandwich plate and screw the filter straight on, easy to put it back at a later date if you decide to run a cooler but if its a road car there really not necessary imo.

It is a while since I looked closely, but if you block off the two outlet ports there is no circuit for the oil to flow round. Just take the sandwich plate off and be done with it, I've no idea why you would rather try and block them off, its just more work than removing it.

I dont think there's a bypass to the oil cooler, so if you just block the pipes the engine will not get any oil...

Thanks for explaining Tom,didn't understand re: the oil circuit - the bolt/ptfe method was raised by a guy near me who I approached to do the engine swap.

Understood, will make sure the sandwich is removed & filter replaced.

The 2 outlets on standard cooler are coolant so without hoses fitted it won't make any difference apart from letting dirt enter.

Easy to remove though as said above just make sure you change the top hose to a non oil cooler one or you will nerd to link the 2 small hoses together.

Not if you are talking about the sandwich plate that takes the oil off to the oil-air cooler mounted in the radiator fan cowl, as is the most common type fitted to the majority of 1.9's.

Sandwich plate & adapter nut's been removed, the engine's in place and running - albeit roughly and with an oil leak  Time for a new thread...
