Subframe For Gti6 Conversion?

Recommended Posts

chipstick

First off, base car is a 1989 1.9 GTi

I am collecting a large selection of parts needed for the conversion before I start, as I like to have everything sorted and crack on to get it done when I know I have all the bits. If I started without a clue, I would give up in no time

I am sure I read somewhere you need to use a 309 subframe. Not really sure why, maybe that is if you have a 1.6 shell?

While on the topic of parts needed, I am looking at 1.6 gearboxes as they seem to have more of a following on this conversion. If the differerence is minimal, I will use the 1.9 box I already have, but would rather fit the whole thing once, not lift it out again to change the box.

Am I right in thinking the 1.6 box is better for 2nd,3rd gear driving, but not ideal for motorway use, whereas the 1.9 is more 'everyday'? Presumably the noted mi16 clutch is needed for both 205 boxes?

I don't like to ask these questions when new to a board, but as I learn more and discover ways of doing things, I like to give back.

Thanks in advance :)

I hope not! Mines going to be using original subframe not sure what benefit you'd get using a 309 one. I'm also going to be using a Xsara VTS box which is supposed to be a happy medium. I wouldn't bother with the 1.6 box it would be to revvy.

Standard 205 GTi subframe is just fine (and identical to the 309 GTi one anyway other than anti-roll bar)

1.9 Mi16 clutch is what you need for any 205/309 or other push-clutch type gearbox. If you currently have a BE1 gearbox (lift-up reverse next to first) then you'll need to use the release bearing from your existing clutch (or buy a new one) as all Mi16 clutches use the later BE3 release bearing.

Gearbox choice is upto you, although my personal opinion is that a 1.9 GTi box is a bit long-geared for 16v conversions.

Excellent info :)

Well thats a nice wedge I had bugeted aside for a 309 subframe that can be spent elsewhere then

I have reverse under 5th, so must have a BE3 box then.

I like the idea of a nice revvy little number, opposed to long ratio's.

This car is about fun,I think a 1.6 box will emphasise that nicely.

On the gearbox note, if I am going to change from a 1.9 to 1.6 box, I can reuse my 1.9 driveshafts can't I?

Purely just need to source a 1.6 box and mi16 clutch?

All this information is available if you do a search.

Yes you can use 1.9 shafts just fine on a 1.6 gearbox - the main thing that's different is the final drive, and fitment of everything is identical.

It's later gearboxes like Xsara VTS that you need to change bits around to allow you to use standard 205 GTi driveshafts.
