Grinding Into Third Gear.

Recommended Posts

Daviewonder

Hello

My 205 with a be3 is grinding into third gear. I have done several searches and have read that it's probably not the syncromesh but instead a small clip in the gearbox could be snapped.

Does anyone know what I mean? Does anyone have any tips on how to change said clip?

Cheers, Dave.

I had the same problem but it turned out to be a bent rob. The slight change in length was enough to cause a grinding going into third.

Its funny you should say that as I've only noticed it happening since a gear rod popped off the other day :)

I'll have a look tomorrow.

Thanks.

Which clip is it that causes this problem then? I'm having trouble selecting 3rd going up or down on my BE1 box as well, is the same clip a possible fix on mine?

Sorry to jump in.

I had broken sycos on my 5th gear be3 box. So took the sycos of my spare box, i now have 5th gear but it gives a small crunch going in. Could this clip be the cause as well ?. I am thinking of getting Miles to rebuild the box at the end of season, just hope it lasts. 1600box with plated diff and 4.8 final drive.Sorry to jump in as well.

have you got the rods adjusted properly?[got miles to check my 1st/2nd synchro which was better on the road but still ground on downchanges during rallies]harder /quicker shifting-adjustted the linkage several times on tsh stages and seems ok now

The gearboxes are generally 20+ years old now, and it's fairly common for the synchros on 2nd and 3rd to be a bit tired - incorrect grade gear oil, mis-adjusted/dragging clutch and other issues only serve to compound the problem.

I have to admit I've still not solved this. I believe it's down to misadjusted linkages as if I push the gear stick lightly over to one side as I go into 3rd it seems to not be as bad.

Any idea how I adjust the linkages up correctly?

I have a slightly crunchy third too, although when a bit of gear oil drooled out the other day when changing a driveshaft, it was frothy and runny like some sort of soup, so it's coming out at the weekend for fresh stuff.

Linkages really have nothing to do with grinding into gear, It will be a worn hub or broken spring
