Rear Suspension Problem?

Recommended Posts

HERMAN

Hello there just wondering what this problem might be.

Just fitted gti6 rear arms ect and put all the rear suspension back together. The car feels great alot beter than it was. But after a track day evening at Silverstone on Monday I dropped my mate off at his home and had a cupa with him. When I came out the drivers side rear wheel was up in the arch and the arm was touching the bump stop. I could not see any problems the torsionbar bolts and nuts were tight and every thing looked ok. I drove the few miles home slowly and put it in the garage. Got out the car and the rear ride hight was back to normal? I have noticed that I get a metalic clunk when I change dirrection at speed which I have not been able to locate yet either.

Any Ideas?

Neil

Sounds like possibly worn splines at one end on the torsion bar mountings

The only thing I can think that would cause the ride heigh to sink and then recover is a rear damper "jacking" down and then recovering when left overnight in garage.

Was the drive on a slope where you parked at your mates?

As per Tom's comment, I have seen faulty dampers cause this kind of behaviour.

No the drive is pretty flat although I had just been over a speed bump before I turned into his drive. I did wonder about the shock sicking (Jacking) and holding the shock closed.

The plot thickens.

Cheers for the sugestions

^Also seen this when the piston seal in the damper dies and ends up in the bleed circuit.

I've also seen a couple of 306's where the splines on the torsion bars had worn enough for them to slip around, although it'd be surprising the arm had dropped enough for it to go back tbh.
