Steering Wheel Shake

Recommended Posts

christopher

I have driven a few 205's throughout the years and the only one that didn't have steering wheel shake was my 205 GTI 1.9. I drove this on the german autobahn at 135mph and it was totally steady and the steering wheel never shook at all.

So now I am driving my 22 year old 205 Euro Rallye where the steering always shakes a bit. (But only above 85mph or so)

But it would be really nice if it was totally still. Question is what is the cause of this?

The answer is surely lots of things. So how can I make this possible.

Here is a list of items that I have changed through the years.

  •
  • New wishbones (Standard)
  • New Upper Engine mount (Standard)
  • New Gearbox mount (Group N)
  • New Shocks and springs
  • New tyres with balancing

So what could be the cause now. The only things I can think of is..

  •
  • Driveshafts??
  • Front hub bearings
  • Lower gearbox/engine mount

Comments and suggestions welcome:-)

typical causes would be wheel balancing or tyre damage, wheel damage as well.

could be diff bearings seeing as its an MA and they arent renowned for their strength, inner cv joints can cause opdd symptoms too.

Well I have old steel wheels but new balanced tyres on them.

My 205 was pretty smooth when the wheels were balanced. I have a lot of issues with my BMW which is very sensitive to wheel balance including the rear. As above the most likely culprit is always the wheels and tyres, even if a wheel is balanced it may be smoothish but a bit of tyre runout could cause wobble (can be seen when spun on a wheel balancer). Other than that ensure there brakes are completely free and not slightly binding. Other than that it might be hub or as above, something to do with the drivetrain.

Worn bushes can also cause shake through steering wheel.

Try changing the track rod ends.
