I've got an xu10j2e turbo from a 406 and I use the standard 205 gti rad. No probs in 1000 mules so far.

Standard GTI one should be ok. That is what I use on mine

Are gti rads the same as turbo diesel ones or normal petrol ones?

TD are thicker and more expensive. GTI rads are the next biggest and TU rads are smaller in general

I have both a tu rad and a td one, could i get away with using one of them?

TD for sure. It is a thicker GTI one and offers the most cooling capacity of them all

Will it fit easily enough, as i intend to drop it and fit a cossie intercooler above it.

Same size as standard, just thicker. Oil filter may be a little close though but should not be a problem.

205 GTI rad core size is 610x284x32. 205 TD rad core size is 645x301x56.

If you use the larger TD rad you will also need the fan cowling assembly as it is different to a GTI one.

I have the TD rad and fans, so will use them providing they'l still fit if i drop it them down as i have a cossie intercooler to fit above it.

I've been doing some thinking again about what radiator to use, i placed the 1.1 tu one have in position and its going to give me mass's more clearance, it only has one fsn so i could fit a renault 5 tirbo intercooler in reasonably easily.

Further more the outlet of the intercooler will line straight up with the inlet manifold, all the will be needed on the other side is one 135 degree bend. All seems far easier thsn a cossie onee?

I know people say a tu rad wont be be enough, but surely if you have a 1.1 205 and a turbo 205 sat next to each other doing 80mph for example, they will both require the same amount of energy to push them through air. Basic physics?

Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated!

To speak from my own experience, a TU rad is too small for a XU turbo engine. A GTI rad is barely enough on mine when I hit throttle hard and it's only runnig standard boost. When I'm driving around slowly, there's no problem with heat. But when wheather's hot and you get into traffic jam you'll be happy to have enough cooling efficency to cope with that. The XU10TE engine will generate more heat than the 1.1 from your example because it has a higher specific fuel consumption and only one-third of your fuel will generate horsepower, the rest of ist will be convertet into heat. And first and foremost it's so much fun to accelerate with a tct engine so you WILL create more horsepower by hitting throttle and also a lot more heat than a TU. If you don't want to accelerate that fast you don't need a turbo. :P

My advice is to lower a GTI rad like in this Link and put a cosworth intercooler or something similar above or in front of it.
