Not Starting - Just Clicking

Recommended Posts

Hi, have not driven the 205 for about 3 months , took it out from under cover this morning to give it a charge as I expected the battery to be flat. My first attempt to start it was with one of those yellow battery packs attached as in the past when I have not driven it for a while that is usually enough - (although never left it longer than a month before !) but today it didn't work ,just made a clicking sound and sounded like the fuel pump priming or a similar noise, radio came on dash lights up and feels like there is power there !

I thought Ok obviously not enough power in the mobile battery pack so though I'd attach my halfords charger, it's a maintenance charger which I keft on for a 7 or 8 hours- I have just gone back to the car however it is still making the same clicking noise, all the electrics come on !

My question- Do you think my car requires more charging or possible new battery or is there something like the starter motor or something seized (I'm not mechanically minded btw) .

I'm also blocked in on my drive as there is a party down the road and some melt has parked over my drive so I can't evevn give it a push !

Cheers in advance

Huggy

I'd put money on the battery not having enough charge - either due to the battery being generally duff or something (interior light on??) flattening it.

Could be the classic starter solenoid probem that means unless it's got a really strong battery it won't start.

It may also be worth removing and cleaning/greasing the battery terminals. If they're dry/corroded then if you're putting the jump starter pack on the battery terminals it might not make much odds if the battery isn't well connected too.

Dead starter. Mine was fine and never gave me the click of death until I laid the car up for a year. This has now been the bain of my life.

Get another starter and pop it on and save yourself months of worry and let downs as I didnt and wish I had.

Ps

I do hope its just the battery

If it has been sat about for ages it could well be the battery.

Has this ever happend before? You can attach a voltmeter to the battery to see how much power it has. It it has something reasonable (12.4 v +) then it could be the starter since those yellow power packs have always worked for me.

The problem is often a combination of things..

My dads car had this problem intermittently. After changing the battery, contacts, alternator, starter and ignition switch it was finally solved.

The problem was probably mostly the ignition switch which had black carbon burnt contacts.

In your case if you put a good battery on it and use the power pack and it won't turn over it is likely to be the starter or contacts to the starter
