Hub Nuts

Recommended Posts

2052006

Peugeot have so far twice supplied me with the wrong sized hub nuts for 1.9 shafts, they don't seem to have a clue. The shafts are GKN ones and my current hub nuts take a 35mm socket and need to be 'staked', rather than pinned. Any idea where I can get them, or a definitive part number for Peugeot? Service box is not clear.

Thanks.

I know exactly the type you mean, and there is no record of them on servicebox!

my car has one of each type

All I can think is that they were an aftermarket shaft.

I know what you mean. I replaced my drive shafts last year (used GSF) ended up with one of each.

The one thing I will say about nyloc nut is that they are designed to be used once. So in theory if you have to take the drive shaft out you should replace the nut on re-fitting with new.

In reality you are normally ok for a good few removals and refits, but you do need to keep and eye on how the nylon is wearing.

This. I'm pretty sure that the staked ones were on aftermarket shafts, and the original OE shafts were the pinned type.

Certainly all the OE 205/309/306/Xsara shafts that I've seen have been the pinned type, and the only staked nuts I've seen away from base model and 1.6/diesel shafts (which have a smaller thread) have been on shafts which have been replaced in the past. I know my 205 with 309 'shafts has odd hubnuts for this very reason, as they're different makes of shaft each side.

Probably the easiest solution is a set of nylocs like Tom Fenton is selling in the thread linked to above.

or drill a hole across the end of the shaft and use the Pin :)

This ^^. Nylocs are perfectly fine but I prefer personally to know that there is a pin through it incase it ever were to slacken. Nylocs are ok on a competition car as generally you will be going round it often enough after events and spanner checking it, plus if you have to change a shaft quickly it's 1 less thing to do.

I have just fitted new rear hub nuts to mine and there 35mm socket size. Might be worth a try. about £2.40 each.

Apparently, according to an MOT station a few years ago, the staked type of nut are not roadworthy. I had a right ding-dong with them over that.

Anyway, I got a few hub nuts of this type from GSF the other day for my 306. Should have them on the shelf.

How would they see them though? Being that they are not allowed to remove any parts (including wheels/centre caps).

I had no centre caps on the 1.9 alloys at the time.

Oh.....s*it. But still, most aftermarket shafts come with the staked type of nut, why are they not roadworthy? I understand it was not you who said they weren't but the MOT station, but what was their justification?

Right you were to have it out with them! Im nearly sure most toyota's have the staked type nuts as standard. Someone maybe on their high horse that day?
