Recommended Posts

just bought a kit off ebay, it included a garret turbo, exhaust manifold, hoses and piping, and the intercooler (needs a housing though)

whats the minimum i need to get it running safely?

and how do i need to make any modifications to the intake system, such as afm, throttle body?

thanks in advance

Que Tom Fenton

Regarding the intercooler, are you going to drop the rad to fit it in? What size intercooler is it?

i had a look for that thread but couldnt find it.

not sure yet, literally just won it on ebay, and it doesn't mention it. do you put the radiator on different brackets and drop the intcooler over the front of it?

also just another question, will i need a thicker head gasket to lower the compression ratio, as cant afford low comp pistons?

thanks again

I would have a careful think about what you have bought as you generally need more than just a turbo and exhaust manifold, an intercooler and connecting pipes. You really need some form of proper engine management to run the turbo without dropping the compression ratio severely. The most basic set up was the old Turbo Technics kit. This had a throttle body with a 5th injector to add the extra fuel when on boost, an MF2 controller to control that injector and a special distributor to advance and retard the ignition when on boost. You need to think about how you are going to control the fuel and spark and what in the "kit" will do this. If the manifold is just a 406 2.0T one then you'll need to adjust the bottom engine mount and gear rods to get clearance for the turbo. You'll also need pipework sorting to supply a water and oil feed to the turbo and this will require a T piece for an oil feed and a return welding into the sump.

I'd have a real good read of Toms post on how he did his as that was done properly. I bolted the 2.0T on my 1.9 engine but was lucky in that it was low compression to start with. However I did some research before I bought anything as I didn't want to end up with unusable bits in a box!

As said look at it closely as I see lot's on Ebay sort of stating Turbo Tech parts when it's just off a 406 turbo and almost worthless without wanting to sound harsh

yeh i am going to go down the 5th injector route, sounds so much simpler and cheaper.

what will i need for this set up then?

thanks alot for your help
