hiya,... ive got a 1.9 8v and i know some of you will say just todo an engine swap ha ....

But what would you vote for TURBO or R1 carbs?? i can have either off a mate, so just woundering what your choices would be and about gains, i know theres not going to be alot more added but, its just a thought ...

thanks :)

boost baby! seriously though, bigger gains to be had by turbocharging than carbs. have a look for tom fentons thread in the project section. very indepth about turbocharging the 8v albeit a 1.6.

No brainer. Turbo charging is a lot more involved obviously. Ie low compression pistons and intercooler piping not to mention management. I'm

Building an mi bottom end (forged internals obviously) 306 xsi head, big turbo and stand alone management. Hoping to see 250 bhp+. Carbs are a lot less work but then a lot less power.

I agree with Miles, though there is doing a turbo properly or very poorly.

Personally I find the whole bike carb thing a bit unprofessional. Whilst it does work, it has a lot of compromises in it for the sake of cost. It is also a bit of a step back technologically as computer controlled injection is more effective than carbs, however I appreciate there are carbs that offer better returns than the stock Bosch injection set-up (throttle bodies are the best of both worlds).

Turbos have moved on significantly since the 80's too and long gone are the MF2's, fifth injectors and the dizzy advance capsules of the Turbo Technics set up. Fuel and boost are controlled by a myriad of sensors now to get the right Air / Fuel ratio and sparking.

Most modern cars seems to have a turbo now and none have carbs so this is certainly the way to go if you are not nostalgic for the bark of carbs. However bike carbs are a simple bolt on and turboing is not. There will be many secondary considerations to bear in mind once turbo'd, like gear ratios, tractability, heat management.

If your mate has "turbo stuff" has he got a complete package or just the classic eBay kit like 406 manifold, 90k mile turbo, an intercooler and some pipes. That "kit" is only worth £100 really but it will cost you another £700 minimum on top to get it running basically. The easiest turbo option is to change to the 2.0 turbo lump and wiring as a whole, but tht is not an ideally suited conversion in a 205 without leaving the ECU on the front inner wing.

I hope this actually helps! If money was no object, the question would be "Throttle bodies or Turbo" and they have two different characteristics.

turbo over carbs but a decent n/a engine on proper throttle bodies above both
