Are Xu9 & Xu10 Interchangeable?

Recommended Posts

Will the head and exhaust manifold from a xu9j2 fit straight onto an xu10j2 motor?? If so...any hiccups with it?

Any tips appreciated

Exhaust manifold is a straight swap.

The heads are interchangeable to a point, but the chamber size is different as is the shape of the inlet port. I don't have the figures to hand, but an XU9 head on an XU10 will likely raise the compression ratio too much IMO, given that when you do it the other way (ie XU10 head on an XU9 bottom end) you have to skim over a millimeter off the head to get the CR right.

PS. I'm assuming that you're actually refering to the XU9J1 (105hp low-comp engine) or the XU9JA/Z (130/122hp GTi engine) - rather than an actual XU9J2 which I'm not sure that you ever got in Australia - it came in 405 SRi/GRi and BX GTi 8v's over this side of the world. The XU9J2 was quite different casting wise, with downdraft ports and an inlet manifold that looks more like an Mi16 item and isn't interchangeable with the other XU9 heads.

Cheers for that Anthony....very helpful.

Yes we did indeed have the the XU9J2 for a short time here [early 405 ] so not referring to the Xu9j1 or Jaz. Para 2 doesnt auger well for that conversion then :{

If it is a XU9J2 head then it would be worth double checking the chamber volume against a XU10J2 head and seeing what the difference is.
