Car Storage Charge

Recommended Posts

Batfink

Currently I have access to a lot of workspace (5000 square ft) and I have been asked whether I can store a car for a few months or maybe longer. I understand that no-one wants to spend a fortune on a vehicle thats stashed out the way but I really have no idea what to ask for. Its not going to be an inconvenience and I guess its a little bonus for me.

Anyone done this or pay for a garage or lockup and can tell me what you charge/ pay out???

Kev

£20 a week seems fair to me.

I'd say £10.00 to £15.00, I pay £100.00 a month for a barn which can store 5 cars and a load of bulky spares, Not the easiest of access thou which is a good thing really

I was spending £10 a week on storage for the 205, in a barn/ garage not too far from Bath. Seemed a fairly resonable ammount.

Im looking at similar stuff myself (Miles you bugger, Id give my right arm for your barn at that price!) and asking rates seem to range from £10 - £20pw, not sure if those asking for more are actually successful of course. Just as point of reference, here in York the council charge £8pw for one of their garages though my mate Dave has been on the waiting list for 18 months!

IMO it should reflect what the place costs you, divisible by the space being given up. But;

my local council charge just less than £8/week for a lockup

Exactly, so if it's too much you'll price yourself out of the market!

But as you probably are well aware, simply storing a car for someone can be far from simple!

Depends how secure your place is as well, the more secure the more you could reasonably charge.

Hi Kev,

My lock-up in Finchley (you've seen it) costs £60 a month.

Location is going to be the big factor in terms of pricing.

Have you also considered access times, security issues etc?

cheers

Ian

My lock up near Marlow was £10 a week, including power.

Also had a council lock up in Woking at about £20 a week . No power.

Make sure it is you that is on the bill though, as when she stopped the direct debit without me knowing I lost the entire contents.

If it's for a mate, I would say just a crate of Stella every month. Taking cash could cause headaches, especially if something happens to their car, such as it being stolen from your garage. I would offer it as a favour, rather than actually charging him an amount, if that makes sense! If you charge him, then in my view, you are offering a service, and it all starts to get a bit grey as to who is responsible for the car.

There would be no access unless I'm there. I'm putting a few £k into making the building secure as its where I will be working

Its a friend of a friend. Mates would get a better rate lol

I'll have insurance so it would be covered. Theres more valuable stuff than his car :D

Wow I thought I was the only one paying for storage!

I pay £12 to put my car in a storage unit (not a personal space, just an open warehouse type room). I get a couple gearboxes on a pallet too with no extra cost.

I was offered a shipping container for storage (it had been nicely refurbished) for £15, but £3 per week more than the storage company above.

Like Baz said, depends on what you get and many other little factors, like location and security.
