I know exactly how you feel. My car has been annoying me recently, so I took it off the road to sort it. :)

Started off wishing I hadn't as it was a horrendous amount of work. :( it's now been 2 weeks and the light is at the end of the tunnel, I should be finished tomorrow. :D

Just so you know what I've done - repaired all the wiring under the dash, put a phase 2 engine wiring loom on the car, changed the loom for the front lights, fitted a power steering setup (new rack, all the pipe work etc) new piping for the washer jets and new gaskets for the inlet manifold and the thermostat housing! probably more, but that's all I remember..

I'll be so happy if I can drive it tomorrow!

From past experience I have found that most of these starter problems stem from a poor feed to the solenoid even though it still has what you describe. Try taking another wire from the ignition key. Fairly easy to do, and cost just a few pounds. Since doing this to mine I have never experienced any further problems.

Same here.....for ages I had the clicky starter syndrome. Once I fitted a new wire from the under the dash to the starter solenoid, never had another problem!
