Swapping Cams Etc From One Head To Another

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i am still unsure what the situation is with my head so was looking at buying a new head and rebuilding it with my cams, valves etc.

is this the correct thing to do? or is it a no no using the bits ( i know cams are ok)

also with regards to a 'tapping' head, how do i correct this?

or even doing a full head rebuild what is involved in this?

still weighing up the options tbh

So long as you lap valves in properly and then adjust the valve clearances afterwards it is not a problem.

Just make sure the new head comes with cam caps.

The tapping head sounds like valve clearance and would be cured by adjusting the shims.

Best bet is get a Haynes as it will explain how to do it.

Assume you are talking about an 8 valve?

Tapping head sounds like bent valves to be honest mate.

New valves really to correct the problem.

The smallest amount can cause the valve to tap against the seat, it'll keep tapping and tapping getting louder then the valve head will let go.

Head rebuild will consist of:

Possibly new valves or old ones will be checked for straightness

Valves guides check in the process

Aswell as bucket tappet condition and tolerances

New stem/cam seals- be silly not to

Valve seats reseated

Light skim

Pressure test and crack test

Condition of cam carrier bearing surfaces checked

Miles is a very good person to speak to about getting this work done, where I take my engine bits to be worked on.

On the other hand it could be a sticky tappet.

Do you know any history on the engine?

P.S O yeah centre cap turned up today mate, spot on

might just bolt mine back together and hope for the best then, if it leaks again i'll buy a new engine complete.

it wasnt really that tappy, just ticking slightly

there's a few low milage ones knocking about now.

no worries about the cap.
