L Bracket Bush

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've been having this same flaming problem for about 2 years now! haha

I got the bronze L bracket bush for my shortened L bracket, but i'm having trouble getting my head around a problem.

With the sleeve inserted and the bolted tightened, if i tighten too much the L bracket wont move. Not tightened enough and the bolt unscrews itself after many gear changes (if you get what i mean!)

What am i doing wrong? Please help! :D

You're trying to fit a part that's inept at it's job. Plain & simple i'm afraid.

Ditch it and buy new standard bushes etc, they're pence and do the job just fine. Either that or faff about for ages with different washers etc as i've done in the past, PITA!

I must say they're not all the same either, some on offer are actually fit for purpose! ;)

When you get a new one try lube it with some of THIS stuff, its extra tacky compared to the usual stuff.

Im looking at getting one made for the lower part of the gear stick itself. Its smaller but the same type as the L bracket. So it will have even less slop.

Sounds like you're missing one of the special "wave" washers.

you need to file them down! because the length of the std pug bolt varies they're made over size. you need to file a little off and try it, keep going at it a little at a time until when you tigthen the bolt it tightens on the shoulder, not on the bush. then it's right.

Additionally I lockwire mine in place, the biggest issue is running a 1.5mm drill through the head of the bolt!

I had the same issue with some ebay sourced bronze bushes and ended up giving up with them and putting standard ones back on.

Like Baz said, just mess about with washer sizes. What I had to do, took a while as the engine was in the car (a rariety)

This is exactly the reason for why I just bought a few needle bearings instead and modified the gear change system with them.

The L bracket needs to be pre-tensioned by the bolt to keep the L arm stable.

I let the standard plastic bushes in place, but also put needle roller bearings both on top and bottom of the standard L-bushes, then I pre-tensioned the bolt such that the whole sandwitch of bearings/washers etc. is compressed fairly hard.

I just had to machine a small aluminium spacer to compensate for the extra length due to washers and bearings.

It's completely firm and due to the roller bearings more or less zero friction no matter how hard you tighten the bolt, as the orginal plastic bushes still are there, beeing the softest parts will take the most deformation from the pre-tension.
