Thinking Of Buying A 1.9 Cti

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I nipped to the bank earlier today and parked outside was a J reg Atlantic green CTI 1.9 for sale with only 40,000 on the clock, it had 'for sale' signs in it so I had a look round. The exterior was pretty spotless with only slight kerb scrapes on the wheels, a small scuff on the bumper and a small spot of laquer missing on the door. The interior was ok except for the usual bolster wear on the front seats and faded red carpet. Also the roof looks like it's been replaced recently.

Now I didn't go out looking to buy another 205 but I must say I'm more than a little tempted. It's up for £1600 ono which seems like a ok price but I don't really know a lot about CTI's. Do the 1.9 ones have the same girly suspension as the 1.6 CTI's or do they have GTI suspension fitted? It's got 1.6 wheels but I seem to recall the CTI's not coming with 1.9 alloys? How hard are the bits to come by compared to the GTI's?

Any advice, views or suggestions will be greatly recieved :)

Miles

Normal 205 things to look for and make sure the hood works and the frame work is OK as you've got to make your own now, Rust is easy to feel under it on top of the rear Qtr panels and above the boot.

Check for Rust and the floor pan

Suspension wise is all 1.6 CTi as are the Brakes, Box is different which I'm sure Henry will tell you about

Price is high so unless mint there's lots of haggling there

Miles is just tight! Basically they are XS spec (track control arms, not wishbones) running gear on 1.6 hubs with XS spec rear beam. Easy upgrade to a GTI rear ARB makes a difference. Check the spec on it as all 1.9's have power hoods but some don't have CL, PAS and EWs (like mine didn't). All had 1.6 wheels. No UK spec ones had half leather or leather. Box is slightly longer first than a 1.6 but quite short overall. engines may only be 105 bhp but are nice and torquey and very comfortable to drive. Late models come with grey carpet and red chequered doorcards. I have seen H plate atlantic blues with a 1.6 engine. 1.9 low comp engine does not have sump spacer like 1,9 gti engine so that is a red herring. they do have a carbon cannister in the passengers front wing and under the arch.
