Xu9Dt Into 1400 Tu Cj

Recommended Posts

I know this is a bit off course on here, but i after some info regarding this conversion.

i friend of mine has a N-reg 306 dturbo sat rotting, and im wondering how much work it'l be to put the engine in my 205 cj?

My thoughts so far were:

Engine and gearbox mounts, will fit straight in/on

Exhuast will need chopping

Clutch and throttle cables will be ok,

Radiator hoses not an issue

Wiring?? Ignition feed to the 306 engine loom and it'l run fine???

tank and pump? drain and refill with diesel??

Thoughts and suggestions please, before i part with any wedge!

You may need to add a few washers on the end of the clutch cable to take up the slack. 205 cable works a mate has used one.

You might get away with the tank as it only has pickup pipes (no pump), the diesel pump obviously pumps the diesel from the tank.

The diesel pump solenoid requires a switched 12v feed.

Revcounter may be an easy fix, find the tacho wires and connect the flywheel sensor off the 306 to this.... possibly.

Sticking with top mount IC?

Or going to front mount.

Top mount WILL be a problem

You'll need to change the front subframe for an XU one. Probably be best to use a 205 gearbox as the 306 one has a pull type clutch and i'm not sure if you'll find a cable to fit.

The 306 doesn't use a lift pump in the tank so you'll be OK there with just the injection pump...i think

You'll need complete xu gear linkages including subframe and actual lever. Yes it will just bolt in, prob easier to use a gti complete loom like i did in my tu - xu. :)

Christ you guys were quick! I was also think about the intercooler

As mentioned, XU subframe and linkages required, doesn't have to be a gti item though.

No need for an injection fuel tank unless its a HDI.

The 12v switched supply to the pump could just be wired on to the ignition i assume? or will it already have a wired connection on the 306 loom, that i can nick the plug off?

The rev counter isnt an issue, the CJ doesnt have one! :)

Not sure on intercooler yet, front mount is more messing about and hassle but if the standard top mount doesnt fit i'll have no choice!

Also is it nessary to change the subframe? i thought all the engine mounts would line up?

Are the tu gear lever different to the xu one? obviously the xu gear linkages will be different?

Its a budget build so i dont want to swap the gearbox, will the engine still fit with the 306 one? and i'll use a 205 clutch cable.

This should help!

12v feed: Yes.

The subframe isn't necessary, there's a place to drill a hole on the subframe. I think it's slightly to the right of the TU engine mount hole. Base model Diesel 205 use an XU engine and a TU subframe...

IMO the TU suspension setup will be inadequate, the DT engine is heavy, along with the turbo and diesel pump.

Gear lever is different, XU linkages are different.

Gearbox is fine, you'll need to swap the inner cv cup or swap the diff to the 205 gti diff.

The gear lever steup and linkages off a base model diesel can be swapped straight over.

you'll need a injection tank with fuel pump built in (tu is mechanical lift pump) prob easier to use a gti complete loom like i did in my tu - xu.

Not so true, the diesel pump lifts the diesel out of the tank. No intank pump needed.

Think i'l find me a base model diesel to rob the linkages and gear leaver off.

Why dors the diff need to be changed?

Also, would be easier just to fit an XU7DT?

Diff needs to be changed due to the difference in inner cv length, or swap the inner cv cup over from a 306 xu engine.

Only benefits with the XU7DT, is your don't have to swap the inner cv cup if your using the gearbox aswell.

No intercooler- bad thing

Personally i'd go with the 306 dt lump.

Problem is, ive robbed the xu7 box to go on my 2.0 turbo engine.

I assume that with the intercooler on top, the bonnet wont shut? :/

And yeah i'd prefer to use the 306 engine.

Bonnet won't shut, unsure for an auto bonnet but cant see it being much different.

Hi there, don't forget the diesel fuel pipe return to the tank, don't know if the CJ came with injection or carb.
