went to halfords today for some parts for the mi16. i went to the help desk as you do and the boy said can i help , i said im after a a set of plugs ,leads, dizzy cap and rotor for a bx16v . he then got confused lol. i said its in a 205 gti tho. (shouldnt be a problem i thought) he then checks yup his computer for the parts. yes he said we have the dizzy cap and rotor also plugs but no leads. i took all the other parts and went out to the car. low and behold they where all wrong. honestly never go to halfords for older car parts as there books are all wrong and the workers are numptys.

Actually, Halfords are normally surprisingly good for more mainstream stuff - they usually have 8v GTi parts like dizzy caps, leads, cambelts etc on the shelf for example.

You won't find a motorfactor that has 1.9 Mi16 stuff on the shelf these days, and it's a bit harsh calling the parts desk guy a numpty for trying to find parts for an engine that's not even in the original car and which you probably couldn't give him any further details about to narrow it down. I suspect that you got given BX GTi parts.

My mate has a set of magnacore leads and they look they part, fit nicely but costs a bit.

Ignition amp are the same as an 8v gti, don't buy a new one it'll most likely be faulty.

Some halfords will let you go in with a headed bit of paper to show that your self employed, other you need qualifications in the motor trade. You only need btec level.

Thats why I havent signed mine yet so I can lend it to mates. Sounds like they're a bunch of arseholes at your branch.

Always helps if you know someone who works there, no questions asked!

It makes me laugh because if you go to local motorfactor, all the parts are cheaper than halfords trade prices anyway.

I don't get why people moan about Halfords? Whenever I go, i walk in, find the flip chart catalogue that i need (i.e spark plugs) look up my car, find part number, find part on shelf, walk to counter and pay? No need to speak to anyone. I quite like it.

Because they vary so much! Anthony's local one seems to be great, whereas my pair of local ones aren't so great!

One you couldn't even swing a cat in the shop and the lads in there are lazy chavs that don't care what you're after, seem to care more about big wheels and loud stereos than the fact that you've made them look a tit because they're finding a price on a 1972 Beetle radiator... which is when you give up & walk out!

The other, a superstore, despite a few years ago was pretty good, always had most common 205 parts on the shelf i'd be after, Ferodo Prem pads, rear shoes, handbrake cables, 'stat's, belts, clio oil filters, plugs, leads etc etc. But, they've had a shift around and seem to be more geared towards chavs & leisure; stereos, wheels, camping gear and bicycles, and don't hold so much stock. I find it depends who you get in there as a couple are shockingly poor, to the point of me telling them what to do on their computer! But the manager's an old friend of my mum's so has known me for most of my life which is handy as he's happy to help and well-clued up & some of the girls seem to go out of their way to help, which is doubly pleasant but no good when they can't help!! They used to order stuff in for me, that's stopped too though!

With a trade card they are very good on lots of things, bulbs, wiper blades etc are silly discounted! But not so on others...

Just for everyones info, with a halfords trade card they promise to match the price of any motor factor within 20miles (ish) on like for like parts. You just have to be careful with their own branded products. We went to get some wheel bearings for a golf last week, they were much cheaper than any local factor but they were unbranded chinese ones. They will order other brands for you though. I have previously had wheel bearings in halfords packets that are actually Timken,SNR or SKF.

Also when you get a trade card off them, go in just before they close with a massive stack of receipts and they cant be arsed to look through them, i had receipts for bike bits, computer bits just with car stuff on top.

As Bax says, certain things really are cheap with the card. Especially batteries, these really do end up good value and with good guarantee too. As said bulbs, wipers, etc go from shockingly expensive to quite reasonable.
