I know it's a Golf, sounds like a Golf, feels like a Golf, breaks down like a Golf.

It's my Dad's car and we have tried everything to solve this but no luck, a bit of help would be appreciated from someone who has some knowledge with these.

The problem emerged a month back when it cut out and wouldn't start.

We replaced the:

Plugs

HT leads

Dizzy

Coilpack

Crank sensor

Fuel pump

ECU (didn't work as it needs to be coded)

Fuel filter

Cleaned out the oil breather lines as they were blocked with mayo, a common problem on them.

None of the above worked but then out of nowhere it started!

My dad changed some of the relays under the dash which works, but only works until the engine gets warm.

Once it's reaches about 90'c (water) and 88'c (oil) it cuts out dead.

The relay which controls the ecu clicks when it cuts out.

Any ideas?

I'm stuck for them at the moment...

Thanks

Obvious question is when it cuts out and won't restart, is it obvious why? ie is there a spark, is the fuel pump running, and any fuel being injected?

Sorry forgot to say it starts up now after it dies.

The first time it stopped there was no spark but fuel present at rail.

Its a sensor, use to happen to my Bora, I can't remember what it was called but my mechanic charged me £90 to fix it.

Crank sensor maybe? either way it was something electrical overriding it.

Replaced the crank sensor mate.

Only thing we haven't replaced is coolant temp sensor, BUT im not sure if theres one solely for the ecu temp as the haynes manual doesn't cover it (that we have).

Could you enquire mate please, we're at our tether with this and it needs to be sold.

Could the airflow meter cause this?

Not looking hopeful lol

I would get a diagnostics machine but after reading some of other peoples problems, the fault doesn't show up after it cuts out.

Something I think is causing the ECU to shut down at that certain temperature. It just dies, no spluttering as though the fuel has been cut.

I unplugged what I thought was the temp sensor but it didn't make any difference.

Now if the relay is swapped for another item, it runs for about 30mins then exactly the same problem. Almost seems as though the relay is getting so hot it cuts out.

I've tested the alternator to check it wasn't that, pumping out 14.2-3v
