Non Starter, No Fuel Being Injected

Recommended Posts

I've lurked for a while on the forums and used the search function and solved quite a few issues with my F reg 1.6 gti but thought I'd post to see if I was on the right lines.

Bought the car from eBay and it was fine but as soon as we had the cold weather in and around Xmas 2009 things started to go wrong. After reading the forums I found the multiplug had been sorted by the previous owner. I've replaced the starter motor, alternator, ignition amp, ignition coil, dizzy cap and rotor and spark plugs and the blue temperature sensor near the dizzy. It was working fine again for the odd track day but has now started playing up. At this point I've fitted a new battery and all cables as originals were very corroded and cleaned the earth point on the gearbox and the one close to the off side headlight.

I've confirmed it has spark, and fuel is getting to the rail nicely but the injectors aren't injecting the fuel, plugs are bone dry. Car turns over healthy enough and nothing new fitted since. A bit more research here and I'm thinking I should try another ecu, read a thread about testing the voltage at the connectors to the injector when the ignition is on but not cranking, should see 12v it said. I get 0 on the multimeter. Should I be measuring whilst cranking ? I'm I looking at an ecu / wiring issue?

Search "Injectors Firing As Cranking Stops" sound like a similar fault.

firstly check the tachy relay,it is located up by ECU and is energised by starter solenoid signal wire when cranking and then from dizzy signal when running,as it has spark and fuel pump running it proves dizzy signal is ok.

on tachy relay there are 2 thicker wires out (think they are white?) one will feed the pump one controls injector feed.have a poke with meter and see what you got at each. pump should be wire number 76 and injectors wire number 18.

if you have 12v on one and not other tachy relay is knackered a quick test would be linking the 2 outputs and see if it runs.

for info the permanent live in is wire 1r

Cheers smithy, I did forget to say I did try a 2nd tachy relay, I'll re fit the original and check those wires with a meter.

Pugs in pieces, I thought it would be an earth too, but double checked and cleaned them up again last night with no improvement.

dont the injectors get earth via ecu and not the front earth points?

also forgot to add you need to check feed at injectors when cranking, try it with both leads in the injector plug and then the live in plug and black lead on battery earth that will also check the earth from ecu.

the ecu earths through the tachy relay and into the loom behind the drivers head light on the phase 1 cti, on the phase 1 sunroof model it earths on the gearbox. the complete engine bay loom earths onto the gearbox on all phase 1.5s and 2 i thought.

Peter - funnily enough it was pugs in pieces http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=130425&hl=%20injectors%20%20firing%20%20cranking%20%20stops&st=10

Thinking back I didn't check the plug that attaches to that earth point by the headlight, just cleaned the actual earth point and screw thread and any rust near it with a wire brush. Will add it to tomorrow's job list.

the injectors in my case had 12 v to them whilst cranking, as i released the key to second ignition the injectors fired fuel, traced the loom and found nothing, knew it had to be a bad earth somewhere so disconnected everything and started again, cleaning every earth as i went, the last one to do was behind the drivers headlight, started on the button straight after. i think phase 1.5 looms earth on the gearbox too, 2 small ring terminals with a 13mm bolt. try that first, give both terminals and the box a good clean with some emery cloth or similar. if yours is not firing at all then maybe something to do wth the tachy relay. also dont just rely on the multimeter, mine was saying i had good continuity and the injectors and loom were earthing, they certainly wernt! or at least very poorly.

Gearbox earth and one the plate the ignition amp is on are sparkling clean. Will double check the plug to the headlight area earth then move onto checking voltage at the injectors whilst cranking then move to the tachy relay and ecu area.

Oh and on further inspection the fuel gauge no longer works but it could just be a fuse as it has happened before. Job list is getting longer lol
